🥂🎄🎶Merry Xmas Eve Fun: Lively Chats With Music (DJ), Dancing & 🍾🍸🍻🍷
🥂🎄🎶Merry Xmas Eve Fun: Lively Chats With Music (DJ), Dancing & 🍾🍸🍻🍷
**All I want for Christmas** is… oh no, not more Mariah again (though her track Fantasy is still a dope tune). As it's a British tradition to go for a spirited drink on the eve of Christmas magic - how about joining to sip Pinot Noir, Guinness, French Martini or other another merry beverage over fun conversations encapsulating the holiday spirit? And then, when the mood hits and DJ is in full swing, singing random lines along to **Fairytale of New York** just like we did **Last Christmas**? Is it Xmas numero uno yet? Apparently this year some very questionable Kylie track has taken the crown! Whilst we await the the day of the big December miracle - as well as fun conversations and jokes - one of the resident DJs (not me) will be pumping out some Xmas party singalong crackers plus all usual feel good tunes for dancing **till 3am** whlst we do **another rock n roll xmas** glittery singalong - if the drinks flow endlessly, which no doubt they will....🍸🍻🍷🥂 This year we are back at the home of cool non-touristy music for real music fans - Camden - doing the **jingle bell rock** around the Xmas tree @ the Camden Eye - a neat cosy trendy young bar tucked away 13 second walk from the dusty but ponyless road adjoining Camden Tube station, 1.6 miles from Central London. First we will meet in the Elephant's Head for Pre-drinks and go to the Eye at 11pm for more socialising and dancing. For food there will be at least one fast food outlet opoosite the bar open till 5am. Come **Silent Night** midnight mass - the DJ will be in full musical effect droppin eurphoric bangers so if you live in North London (zone 2) or Central London then this will be perfect xmas eve drinks and music bash as you can literally walk home without having to worry about no public transport after 12am. Try to wear something chrismasie. And make sure you answer the important screening question on your fav xmas song (a prerequisite for attending to ensure you actually like and enjoy key elements of xmas!). And I'll personally buy the first mull wine infused larger-shandy for the first person that can correctly guess all of the famous xmas tunes I have referenced above!!! **\-\-\-\-Strict Attendance Limits\-\-\-** Those of you who are fellow Camden music nightlife lovers or regulars to my events, you'll know the venue is small, very selective and they have limited bar staff to work xmas eve. So if you're not confirmed, please do not turn up. I have set the RSVPs in expectation of a max 50% turnout, any more and security will stop letting people in because of capacity, and worst case we will all get thrown out to accommodate their regular locals and could get barred from my local! As always with all our events, in case of drop outs, preference will be given to my regular crew, genuine music fans and locals to the event vicinity **\-\-\-\-Directions & How To Find Us\-\-\-\-** First we will meet in the Elephant's Head at the back for intros, pre-drinks and then go to the Camen Eye at 11pm for more socialising and dancing. For food there will be at least one fast food outlet opoosite the bar open till 5am. Inside the bar, I'll be wearing customary shiny xmas tinsel. Both bars are about 60 seconds walk from Camden tube station, 8 mins from Camden Overground station. Camden station is literally max 5 mins on the tube from all Central London tube stations e.g Leicester Square (Piccadilly line, Northern line), Piccadilly Circus (Piccadilly, Bakerloo), Oxford Circus (Bakerloo, Central, Victoria), Tottenham Court Road (Central, Northern, Elizabeth), Covent Garden (Piccadilly), Charing Cross (Northern, Bakerloo), Warren Street (Northern, Victoria), Russell Square (Piccadilly). And walkable to central London (e.g. Warren Street) is less than 30 mins. Reindeer Lucas - Ho Ho Ho

Blood on the Clocktower @OtterChaos
Join OverBoard to play the brilliant social deduction game Blood on the Clocktower in person at the brand new board game cafe Otter Chaos in Brixton. If you haven’t heard of Blood on the Clocktower before it is an evolution of classic party games like Mafia/Werewolf where a hidden evil team takes on the good team by lying and killing. The good team has a few tricks up their sleeve but will have to work together to deduce who the evil doers are in their midst. **This is a beginner friendly event so no experience with the game is necessary.** Please note that a gaming cover charge of \~£5 will be payable by each attendee to the venue so that we can make use of the space. We also encourage you to buy food and drink from the bar so we are supporting the business (I can highly recommend their pizzas!) If you want to know more about the rules of the game check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-aZP47Nm9g

Wednesday Acting Workshop - Blood Wedding
Wednesday Acting Workshop - Blood Wedding
Our acclaimed Wednesday workshop returns - we'll be looking at Lorca's classic drama exploring fate, passion, and societal expectations. A bride elopes with her former lover on her wedding day, triggering deadly consequences. Rich in poetic symbolism and folk traditions, the play confronts love’s destructive force and the inevitability of death and honor. We will be working towards A FULL PRODUCTION in April 2026.. Novice | 11-1pm Dec 27 Vortex upstairs
**Update: full for drums, bass, guitar, vocals, 2 of 3 spots taken for lead instruments, 1 of 2 spots taken for piano** full list of scheduled sessions: https://www.meetup.com/Practice-Jazz-Jam-Sessions/events/ **What is it** The novice rehearsal sessions provide an opportunity for people who are relatively new to jazz, to play in a friendly, low-pressure environment. With a short set list that attendees can prepare in advance, it becomes a little less daunting to play and get the most out of practising in a group. See below for this week's setlist. Please sign up before attending. Already full for your instrument? Please check back every other Wednesday, when new sessions go live. If you keep not being able to get a spot, please message the organiser (Xie). Location: Vortex upstairs **Who's it for** Anyone who has practised following the forms (chord progressions) of jazz tunes - maybe on their own at home - and would like to build up playing experience, expand repertoire and practice performing with other musicians. There are various introductions on how jazz jams work - see e.g. https://jazznightschool.org/pages/jam-session-basics You don't need to get all these details right for these novice practice sessions. The set list format should offer opportunities for those at different levels of developing their playing. While at the beginning one might struggle to follow/comp the chords or play through the melody, it gets easier over time and one can start to develop approaches to improvisation, harmonise lead lines, add intros/endings, work on communication between band members, and even listen to recordings together and pick up specific arrangements. Bass players are expected to be able to play a walking bass line on swing tunes, and simple bossa lines for bossa novas. Playing the melody, or "head" - the responbility is shared between horns players (e.g. sax, trumpet, violin), guitar and piano. Feel free to discuss among the group before each song - different parts of the head or the starting / ending heads can be played by different players. Some melodies will better suit several voices at the same time, whereas others are sensitive to variations in how they are played and may prefer a single instrument at a time. **What it's like** A relaxed and welcoming atmosphere - please put aside any worries of making mistakes if you’re thinking of joining us for the first time. To ensure the group is accessible for those at different levels, I ask that each novice session should work on only the below four songs of the set list, unless each and every attendee feels they prefer to move on. Each novice session is limited to up to: 1 drummer, 2 bass, 2 keys, 2 guitar, 3/4 lead instruments. Always use the top of the description to see if there is an available slot for your instrument - please do not try to work this out yourself by looking at the other attendees' instruments. **Tunes this week (Sat 27 Dec)** * Tenor madness in Bb (warm up) (Rollins, Coltrane) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MkUvZUTFUc * Girl from Ipanema in F (Jazz Core) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGNSflh59KQ * Little Sunflower in Dm (Freddie Hubbard) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZBu0ARDGxs * Almost like being in love in Bb (Chad LB) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2DLnEhsimM Everyone is encouraged to listen to a variety of recordings for each song, but please ensure you are familiar with the recording provided as a primary reference. **Tune preview - next novice session (Sat 3 Jan, 11am only)** * All of me in C (warm up) (Sonny Stitt) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psUdIsccV9M * Billie's bounce in F (Charlie Parker) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4mRaEzwTYo * Black Orpheus in Am (Wayne Shorter) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4aJWz0ysDk * Old Devil Moon in F (Vincent Herring) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUlHaAdgJy8 **Preparing for the session** The chordal form of each song follow the iReal Pro app as a common reference, or you can use sheet music from Real Books. Resource for sheet music: https://www.seventhstring.com/fbindex.html http://therealbook.info/ Try to immerse yourself in the songs by listening to recordings by different artists on youtube, spotify etc. Learn the head (main melody) of the song if you can. Don't hesitate to let the band know you can play it so you can start things off **Equipment** there is a piano, drum kit (no cymbals or high hat clutch), bass and guitar amps, stands, and microphones. Drummers: please bring cymbals (none available for rental) and hi hat clutch **Vocalists** Singers are welcome, however please note that the songs have fixed keys, and some of the repertoire are likely not in the right key for your range. If you are an experienced singer, it may be possible to arrange sessions with repertoire catered to you - to explore this, please first come to the "Afternoon Open Jams" so I can get a sense of your singing. **Observing** Would you like to attend a session without playing/singing, to get an idea of the format or to get a sense of what to practise first at home? You can sign up as usual to any novice session, and send me a message that you'd like only to watch the session. The fee paid can also be carried over toward any future session where you join to play/sing, when you feel ready. **Cancellation policy** Please try to make it to any session you sign up to, as the jams are organised around a particular mix of instruments. However, if things do come up and you can no longer make a session, please send a message to the organiser, Xie, as soon as possible. Places are non-refundable if your plans change, but if you provide over 1 week notice it may be possible to carry over the fee for a future session. \-\-\-\-\- any questions do get in touch!

Our January program is privileged to have Kristen Tregar as our speaker. Ms. Tregar is the co-author with John de Lancie (the actor who portrayed the character Q on Star Trek next generation) of a radio play depicting the events surrounding the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial. The trial decided the issue of some of the Dover school district board members attempting to insert creationism disguised as "intelligent design" into the 9th grade biology curriculum. She will discuss the trial and the process of writing the play. (Bob Leonhard has seen the play and it is riveting and tense). Ms. Tregar's bio is below: Kristen Tregar is a dramaturg, director, playwright, and theatre teacher. She earned her Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre from the UC San Diego and UC Irvine joint program. In addition, she has a MS in Forensic Science from City University of New York- John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a MA in Educational Theatre from New York University- Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. In 2013, in collaboration with Irish colleagues, she founded *The Ireland Project*, an intercontinental devised theatre work with high school students in New York and Tallaght, Ireland. Her original short story "Far From Here" was recently published in *Stay Awhile Longer: More Scenes From Temecula Valley*. She has two rescued dogs (Kira and Harry) and she rides, competes, and foxhunts with her horses, Andromache and Baker Street Irregular. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Contra dance with Big Scioty on Jan 3 - First Congregational Church
Contra dance with Big Scioty on Jan 3 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Gaye Fifer** **Band: Hot Coffee Breakdown** **Big Scioty Contra Dance** **temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/) Please bring your own refillable water bottle. Snacks to share are always welcome!
