See all- 🎬 Films to Watch #6 – "Mary & Max" at LAB111LAB111, Amsterdam
Our next event is part of the "Films to Watch" series — a selection of unmissable films from the current Dutch cinema season. This time, we’re going to see Mary & Max (2009) at LAB111 in Amsterdam.
After 15 years, this acclaimed stop-motion film by Adam Elliot is finally getting a proper cinema release in the Netherlands, following the success of his recent feature Memoir of a Snail.
Mary & Max tells the story of an unusual pen-friendship between Mary, a lonely 8-year-old girl in Melbourne, and Max, a 44-year-old man in New York living with Asperger’s Syndrome. Through letters, chocolate, and condensed milk, they build a deep connection that spans decades. It’s a film full of dry humour, emotional depth, and heartfelt imperfection — both quirky and touching, and beautifully animated in handmade clay.
With themes like loneliness, neurodiversity, mental health, and friendship, it’s a powerful and unique experience — often hilarious, sometimes melancholic, and never forgettable. After the screening, we’ll head to the LAB111 café for a relaxed drink and some conversation.
🎟 The screening starts at 19:30 — tickets are available directly from the LAB111 website (if you have the Cineville is free!). Booking in advance is highly recommended.
Hope to see you there!
