An amazing walk by a veritable carpet of Bluebells in Kings Wood in Challock ! Please arrive by 9.30am to facilitate the purchase of group train tickets for the train at 10.07am that arrives at Wye at 11.02am after changing at Ashford International. Train ticket : return to Chilham. Or you may decide to drive. The walk shall commence by 11.05am. We shall walk for around 8-9 miles taking the amazing carpet of bluebells in Kings Wood in Challock before having tea in the beautiful village of Chilham. We shall take the 5.13pm train back that arrives in London at 6.18pm after changing at Ashford International. Meetup fee £5 payable in cash or by bank transfer in advance. The trail takes us into the beautiful **Lullingstone Country Park**, internationally important for its collection of ancient trees. Beech, ash, oak, sweet chestnut and hornbeam all thrive here, with some specimens thought to be over 800 years old. Emerging from the woodland, we arrive at **Lullingstone Castle**, set beside its peaceful lake, before continuing to the site of **Lullingstone Roman Villa** — a rare survival of a Roman estate house first built around 100 AD. From here we continue through rolling Kent fields, rewarded with views of the impressive **Eynsford Rail Viaduct**, its nine red-brick arches towering 22 metres above the valley floor. Our hike concludes in the charming village of **Eynsford**, where we explore the evocative ruins of **Eynsford Castle**, a Norman stronghold built in 1088. Come along on Saturday 25th April for a coach trip to the ancient sites of Stonehenge, Avebury and Uffington White Horse! **About the day** We are travelling by coach to visit some of England's oldest & mystical sites, two in Wiltshire and one in Oxfordshire. **Stonehenge** Stonehenge started to be built in 3100BC and is today one of the most famous sites in the world. At the site, I will tell you more about Stonehenge and why its there. Options when we arrive at Stonehenge: * pay to take the mini-bus down the road to view it close up, about 4 metres away (it costs £25 to do this, pay when you arrive). If you are an English Heritage or National Trust member its free to get the mini-bus. * The rest of us will walk the 1 mile down the road and view it from the wire fence (about 5 or 6 metres away) for free. **Avebury** Avebury is about 20 miles north of Stonehenge, it dates to about 2800BC and is the largest stone circle in Europe. Its free to walk on the site, which covers over 281 acres and you can even touch the stones! I will guide you round the site telling your about the stones. Its free to view the stones. **Uffington White Horse** Uffington White Horse is a huge chalk drawing on the top of a hill which dates back to 900BC. It was probably a tribal symbol, as the remains of Uffington Fort lies behind it. The site is the highest point in Oxfordshire and gives stunning views across the countryside. I will tell you more about the site when we are there. At 400ft (122m) deep and three miles (4.8km) long, Cheddar Gorge is England's largest gorge, boasting subterranean caverns with impressive displays of stalactites and stalagmites. Britain's oldest complete human skeleton, known as Cheddar Man, was found here, as was some extremely rare Ice Age art. Cheddar is also the birthplace of the world-famous Cheddar cheese. We're going to visit the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company – a family-owned, independent small artisan cheesemaker, that makes the only authentic Cheddar cheese in the world! Cheese is produced by hand, using traditional methods, such as using raw milk, traditional animal rennet, and a cloth wrapping. This iconic cliff-top hike—widely regarded as one of England’s most spectacular coastal walks—offers breath taking and widely celebrated views of the Seven Sisters' white cliffs and the famous Beachy Head, culminating in the graceful seafront town of Eastbourne. The walk involves a fair amount of ascent and descent—aside from the relatively level stretches near Cuckmere Haven and the final approach along Eastbourne’s promenade, the path is rarely flat. Yet, the majestic scenery makes the effort feel almost effortless. **Important Note: Cliffs Danger** Take care near the cliff edges on this walk. There are steep drops along the cliffs, as they are crumbly and liable to collapse: the official advice is to keep 5 metres from any cliff edge. People taking selfies regularly ignore this advice: don't imitate them. If you fall or collapse of the ground at the cliff's edge would almost certainly result in fatal. **Highlights: Iconic Landmarks** * **Martello Tower (Seaford**) - The westernmost of 103 Napoleonic-era coastal fortresses. * **Seven Sisters (or Eight 🙂?)
