What we’re about

'King Kong' (1933), 'Casablanca' (1942), 'Metropolis,' (1927), 'A Trip to the Moon' (1902).

Everyone has heard of these films. How many have you seen?

Do you love Hitchcock? F.W. Murnau? Fritz Lang?

Ever see a Mae West movie? A Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers musical? Adore Noir? Love Comedy? Universal horror movies?

You've come to the right place.

In Essential Cinema, we see a classic movie every week. This is the MeetUp group for those really passionate about film. We discuss each movie, talk about how it fits into the history of the medium, and will give background about techniques and trivia to help understand and enjoy it.

We concentrate on movies made from the 1920's to the 1950's, with many exceptions. Films are shown in their original language. Most are from Hollywood and are in English. Spanish subtitles are sometimes, but not always, available. For films in other languages (French, German, Japanese) there are subtitles in either English or Spanish.

Essential Cinema is a lively, interactive group for those who want to experience the best in classic movies. In one year you can see dozens of movies that are difficult to find anywhere else. You are encouraged to open your mind and see all kinds of movies, even the ones you are not sure you will like. Silent and experimental films will be included.

At present we meet in a private apartment on Avenida Chapultepec. There is very little room, so our group is limited to those serious about increasing their knowledge of classic film.
