Mercer Bay Hike - Saturday - Auckland Hiking Group

Hello everyone ...mainly  the experienced hikers...

There is no hike this weekend with Feet First as I'm away in New Plymouth as it's my birthday on Sunday . Yay.  My next hike is  next weekend in the Hunua Ranges..the 16th..

Anyway,  re this Saturday the 9th ...If you are an experienced hiker or into photography...or simply want to challenge yourself..and aren't a member of the Auckland Hiking Group Meet Up, then check out their website today as they have one of the most exciting beach and coastal hikes on going to a hidden huge sea cave...near Karekare Beach which I rate as really really awesome !. If you are free.,..get there...you will be amazed !!

As it's a super low tide this weekend  AHG have several things planned including on Saturday going down to Mercer Bay which involves descending down a rough track using ropes and cables that are anchored into the rocks that allow you to safely get down to Mercer Bay .

When you are there, there's an exciting mix of things to do, walking through a tunnel in the rocks to the right of the beach only accessible at low tide to the other side of the coastline, then you get to go into Cathedral Cave,.so named as it has a hole in the roof and the light come through it, giving it a god like feeling ..with the shaft of light beaming downj into the darkness of the cave....you have to be there to get what I mean.

Again , this big sea cave is only accessible at a super low tide...

Then its an easy scramble from the beach back up to the Mercer Bay track and then they are going to Karekare Beach.

Anyway, its rated as a grade 4 out of 5 so only for those that like abseiling ...

More on the Auckland Hiking Group meet up site.

Happy hiking everyone, or whatever you end up doing this weekend.

Keep well.

Cheers Stephen F.
