Return to Nagog Hill & Grassy Pond!

Details

A nice late afternoon hike through some beautiful conservation land!

http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/8/0/0/e/event_155612782.jpeg

This is a beautiful and interesting short hike - and now that warmer weather is here, I wanted to repeat it! Some interesting features include a large glacial erratic, called Egg Rock, and a large vernal pool that is home to many species that breed only in such habitat. At the northern end of the main trail there are views of Nagog Pond which is one of the Commonwealth’s ‘great ponds’. After we do the first loop, we will take the connecting trail to Grassy Pond which is one of the town’s most diverse conservation areas because of its varied habitats and ecosystems. These include the Pond, an extensive wetlands at the pond’s outlet, two small streams, a boulder field, a large meadow, many stone walls, and dense stands of eastern white pine and open stands of northern hardwoods such as white ash and red and white oak. Mosses are prolific where they coat many of the stones and tree stumps.

Distance: About 3 miles
Elevation: Some ups and downs, nothing too strenuous
Tortoise time: About 2 hours

Info and trail maps HERE (http://www.actontrails.org/DescNagogHill.htm) and HERE (http://www.actontrails.org/DescGrassyPond.htm).

Please wear sturdy shoes or boots and wool socks. Some of the land is boggy, so waterproof shoes are best. Bring a light jacket, a snack and at least a liter of water. Weather is supposed to be in the high 60s and sunny.
