FREE HIKE 22 km | Chichester Canal and Bosham Estuary circular

Details
Join us for a relaxed and scenic group hike starting from Chichester Railway Station, exploring some of the most picturesque landscapes in West Sussex. This circular route combines tranquil waterside paths, charming harbours, and sweeping estuary views. It’s perfect for those who enjoy walking, nature, and discovering coastal beauty.
We’ll begin by following a peaceful canal path out of Chichester, enjoying calm waters and lush surroundings. The route leads us past the picturesque Birdham Lock and the bustling marina, before continuing on to the historic village of West Itchenor.
From here, we’ll take a short and scenic ferry ride across the estuary to Bosham.
Please note: The ferry fare is £3. Each attendee is responsible for paying their own fare. Please bring £3 in cash and/or a debit card to pay the ferryman.
Once across, we’ll enjoy a gentle walk along the waterfront, where the ever-changing tides create a beautiful and dynamic backdrop. The exact route may vary slightly depending on the conditions on the day, but we’ll continue inland via Fishbourne, passing through open countryside, ancient fields, and quiet paths as we make our way back to Chichester.
This walk offers a wonderful mix of nature, history, and fresh coastal air. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a pleasant day out, this is a fantastic way to explore the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
To finish the day, we’ll take a little time to explore Chichester’s charming historic centre. There’s the option to enjoy a gentle stroll through the beautiful Bishop’s Palace Gardens, a peaceful, walled oasis hidden just behind the cathedral. We’ll also pass through the grounds of the magnificent Chichester Cathedral, where you can admire its striking architecture and soak up the tranquil atmosphere.
It’s the perfect way to wind down after the walk and take in a bit of the city’s rich history before heading to the station for return trains.
👣 BEFORE YOU GO:
Don’t forget to bring comfortable walking or hiking shoes, a camera, and plenty of water! There may be opportunities to stop for refreshments or use facilities along the way, but it’s a good idea to bring a packed lunch in case options are limited.
We look forward to seeing you there!
