This week we will do a semi-annual Trail Maintenance hike on the Foothills Trail. GNHA has Trail Captain responsibilities for the section from Sassafras to the Nature center. This entails light hand saw and lopper work to clear the trail and reporting any large blow downs.
We will meet at Holly Springs and divide into 2 groups. One group will start at the Nature Center and the other will start on Sasafrass. We should meet around Drawbar Cliffs or Lighthouse camp site for lunch. Bring hand saws, loppers and pruning shears. If you don't have any, I will bring extras. We should all meet at Holly Springs to divide into two groups.
University Square at 8:00, Holly Springs at 8:30.

Sassafras to Drawbar 10mi/1100ft EV VSThis group meets Wed at University Square Shopping Center. The hikes are scheduled 1 to 4 weeks in advance and target hikes which are 10 miles long and climb 2000 ft. We hike at approx. 2.5 MPH, faster or slower depending on terrain. GNHA is organizing a Wilderness Medical First Aid Training event for October 7th.
This will be held in the Greenville area at Paris Mountain and the group size is limited to 15 people.
The event starts at 8:00am and runs to 5:00pm. The course details are below.
Admission is $25/person to cover the cost of the course as well as snacks. Participants will need to bring their own lunch and sleeping/exercise mat.Admission can be purchased at the address below.

This training covers the most likely injuries we may see on a day hiking trip. The class will be presented by Jeff Kerby of the Wilderness Medical Associates. We follow the Baxter Creek Trail to the summit of Mount Sterling, and return by the same route. Enjoy a long ascent to reach the spruce-fir forest near the crown of Mt. Sterling. Also, enjoy 360 degree views from the Mt. Sterling Fire Tower, the highest elevation (above sea level) fire tower remaining in the Eastern United States.

Daniel Ridge Loop to Farlow Gap Trail. We'll follow the Davidson River for a while, climbing gradually, then we'll continue the loop to meet the Farlow Gap trail. This is a lovely out-and-back woodland walk. Daniel Ridge is fairly easy but Farlow Gap can be a bit harder. Total 6-7miles depending on how far we go in Farlow Gap.
Please meet for carpools ready to depart at 8 am from Publix, please arrive 15 min earlier to sign-in. If you are meeting at the trailhead, please leave a comment so we are not waiting unnecessarily. Put in Daniel Ridge Falls Parking in googlemaps. Meet the group there at 9:30 am. Once you enter Pisgah Forest, you will go left on the road to Cove Creek and go on beyond that parking area to the Daniel Ridge parking further down.
