Star Party at McDonald Observatory – An Unforgettable Night Under West Texas Sky

Details
Join us for a Saturday night escape into the cosmos at the world-renowned McDonald Observatory! As part of our Davis Mountains weekend, we’re heading just up the road for the Star Party experience—a guided tour of the night sky in one of the darkest places in North America.
This is more than just stargazing—it’s a professionally led experience in the high desert sky, combining science, wonder, and the kind of awe you only get far from city lights. If you're already joining us at Davis Mountains Preserve for the July 11–13 Open Weekend, this is the perfect Saturday night add-on. Come early to explore the Visitor Center exhibits, grab a seat at the outdoor amphitheater, and prepare for a truly unforgettable night.
Tickets sell out fast — book your Star Party spot now via mcdonaldobservatory.org. As of this posting, 225 tickets remain.
Pro tips:
- Dress for the mountains—temps can drop after dark!
- Flashlights must be red-lens only (or use your phone’s red screen mode)
- Bring a camp chair or blanket if you prefer your own seating
- The Observatory is located just 20 minutes from our group campsite at Davis Mountains Preserve
Let’s go from hiking peaks to gazing at planets—all in one incredible weekend.
