Beginner’s Bird Walk at Onion Creek Greenbelt

Details

Attendance is limited to 40 people. Sign-up is required via Travis Audubon. Link below

Curious about birding? Come join us for a relaxed, beginner-friendly bird walk through the scenic Onion Creek Greenbelt in southeast Austin. Whether you're brand new or just brushing up your skills, this is a welcoming space to learn, explore, and connect with others who love the outdoors.

Located within a 250-acre greenbelt surrounded by the 517-acre Onion Creek Metro Park, this area was once a neighborhood before being reclaimed by nature after historic flooding events. With mostly flat trails and the calming flow of Onion Creek nearby, it’s an ideal spot to spot birds and enjoy the beauty of Austin’s wild spaces.

We’ll be looking for woodpeckers, summer residents, and woodland raptors like Cooper’s and Red-shouldered Hawks—moving at a relaxed pace that allows for learning and conversation.

Free and open to the public—no Travis Audubon membership required, but must register here.

Whether this is your very first bird walk or your hundredth, this is a relaxed and welcoming way to explore birdwatching and connect with fellow nature lovers.

Bring:
– Binoculars (or borrow a pair—they’ve got loaners!)
– Water, sunscreen, and walking shoes
– A sense of curiosity and love for nature

IMPORTANT: Attendance is capped at 40 people.
