Christians love them some Bible! Muslims love them some Qu'ran! Scientologists love them some Dianetics!
Poor freethinkers- they have no book of wisdom to peruse when they are looking for guidance and comfort, and to remind them of what's really important. To ground them.... to remind them that there is hope even when things are grim.
Well, let's make one! Join us in a monthly workshop series where we discuss our personal values and record our beliefs in our very own document, a record of who we are and what is really important to us. A DIY bible. An owner's manual for life, written for you, by you. We will share values with each other, take some time for writing our thoughts, talk about formatting our document on the computer, and eventually at a future meetup, we will take what we've got, print it out, and bind it to make a real book! Something you can throw at someone in anger like Mandy Moore's character in Saved!
For our second meeting, we will talk about Shelter. One of our basic physiological needs, according to Maslow, shelter is essential to life. It's part of our economy, it's part of our culture, it's part of our lifestyle. What do you believe about shelter? Is it better to rent or own? How do you feel about being a landlord? What do you expect from your landlord? What do you expect from your tenants? If you own your own home, what are some preventative maintenance things you do every summer/spring/fall/winter? How do you feel about solar panels? Do you need a big backyard? Why or why not? How do you feel about grass lawns? What do you do to keep your utility bills down? What if the housing market shifts and interest rates are low, but prices are high? Should you buy? When is it time to refinance? Are adult children that live with their parents losers? Is an Earthship right for you? If your friend has fallen on hard times, should you let him stay with you for a few months rent free? Should you let your children live with you after they turn 18, or kick 'em out into the street?
PLEASE PREPARE SOME THOUGHTS TO SHARE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MEETING. BRING IN BOOKS, ARTICLES, QUOTES FOR SHOW AND TELL.
