Outsourcing the core services of a country - a good idea?

Sweden recently decided to send 600 prisoners to Estonia because its own prisons are too full. This means a core part of the justice system, holding and caring for inmates, will be handled by another country.

Those supporting say this is cheaper and gives Sweden time to build more prison space. Critics warn that prisoners might suffer from isolation, language barriers, or weaker rights, and that such a basic duty should not be handed to someone else.

Others might question it: Should any country outsource key public services at all? Prisons are just one part of the grand picture. What about hospitals, police, or even government offices? Even military? Some things, like waste collection or IT services, are already often run by private companies or foreign contractors. But when it comes to justice, safety, or health, many people believe the state must stay directly in control and this to protect rights and ensure fairness.

Is outsourcing just a smart way to solve problems or a risky step away from national responsibility?
