Everyday Escapes - Helpful or harmful?
Many use small “escapes” to feel better: watching a show, scrolling social media, gaming, reading, taking a long walk, cooking, or crafting.
These activities can calm our minds and lower stress. But sometimes they can also become a way to avoid problems, waste time, or spend too much money. So, when are everyday escapes good, and when are they not? How much is okay?
One can have the view that escapes are healthy self-care, others can see it as detrimental avoidance.
Questions to discuss:
- What signs show an escape is helping (more energy, better mood) vs. hurting (missed work, less sleep, ignoring tasks)?
- Does the reason matter—are you resting or running away?
- Are some escapes better than others (outdoors, creative, social) compared to passive screen time?
- How much time is reasonable on a busy weekday vs. a weekend?
- Do age, budget, or health change what’s “okay”?
- How can we set simple rules like a time limit, a budget, or screen-free hours?
Do you have any go-to comfort hobbies or retreats of your own? How do you keep them balanced?

The debate will begin about 18:05 or when most have gathered. The moderator, Tobias, reads the topic for the group, combined with related questions that might get us thinking. Then we put our names in the chat if we want to speak, and he calls on us (either in turn or else if someone has not spoken, he gives them priority).
