What we’re about
The Interstate Hiking Club is show and go. Non-members can just show-up at an event and hike. No need to register. If you are not a paid IHC member you are allowed 3 free events or trips.
Events seldom end at 12 Noon. You will almost always be hiking until after lunch. The end time is flexible. It depends on conditions and the speed of the group.
Membership in IHC is $21 a year. Use link below. Fill out the form, bring your check and attend a hike/event.
IHC How to Join We require a valid picture.
Hikes, bicycle rides and canoe trips generally are are graded by difficulty of terrain, distance and pace. The Hiking grades are: Easy: These hikes are 3 to 5 miles in length and should have no significant hills. Moderate: These hikes are 5 to 8 miles and may take up to 5 hours, including time for trail lunch. They should not generally have multiple long steep hills, and should be at a moderate pace. Moderately Strenuous: These hikes are 5 to 8 miles with multiple steep hills or 8 miles or more which are mostly flat walking. They can last up to 6 hours, including trail lunch. Pace to be moderate. Strenuous: Not for novices. Hikes are 8 miles or more and last 6 hours or more, including time for trail lunch. These may have many long steep hills and may be at a brisk pace. Most hikes get back about 3:30 in the afternoon. But that is not a certainty. Conditions may force an early end, or hikers may be slower than expected.
Be sure to bring enough water and a lunch too. Sturdy footwear is required. Contact the leader if in doubt. The leader may refuse any member or guest who the leader thinks is ill prepared for the trip. Dogs are not allowed on any IHC events. Sorry!

See all- Hudson River Weehawken to HobokenDunkin', Hoboken, NJ
The hike is from Weehawken to Hoboken, not to Liberty State Park as the title originally suggested.
Meet 8:45 AM at the Weehawken Port Imperial ferry terminal, ready to start walking at 9:00 AM. Drivers can park at the garage across the street for $14 (or $16 if you want to be closer). Information at Parking Garage (nywaterway.com). Note that this would be taking advantage of the Early Bird Special. Plan to use the restrooms at the ferry terminal before we start the walk.
Alternatively, you can get to Port Imperial from Hoboken Terminal (where the hike will end) by Hudson Bergen Light Rail (HBLR). Many NJ Transit trains go to Hoboken Terminal (see Train Schedules | (njtransit.com). I will be arriving at Hoboken Terminal on a train scheduled to arrive there at 7:19 AM. I intend to take the HBLR at 7:45 AM which will get me to Port Imperial very early (8:04 AM), and you are welcome to join me at Hoboken Terminal to do this. HBLR trains departing Hoboken Terminal at 8:05 AM and 8:25 AM will also get to Port Imperial on time.
For all HBLR trains from Hoboken Terminal to Port Imperial, you will have to change at Newport. Exit the train at Newport and the train to Port Imperial should arrive across the platform in a few minutes. I have missed this train once and had to wait 20 minutes for the next one. This is unlikely but does suggest you should board the HBLR train in Hoboken no later than 8:05 AM. Purchase a single HBLR ticket ($2.25/$1.10 seniors) from ticket windows at Hoboken Terminal, ticket vending machines or on the NJ Transit app on your phone. Tickets have to be activated before boarding train.
From Port Imperial we will walk north a bit along the Hudson River, then to the top of the Palisades. We will then walk along the edge of the Palisades with its spectacular views to a memorial marking a spot at which Aaron Burr did not shoot Alexander Hamilton. Then back down to the Hudson waterfront, and along the waterfront to Hoboken. For those who parked at Port Imperial, the hike will end at the 2nd Street HBLR Station in Hoboken where there are trains back to Port Imperial without a transfer at Newport. From there, we will walk back to Hoboken Terminal.
Total distance 8-9 miles, mostly flat except a climb mostly via stairs to the top of the Palisades and a steeper climb down via stairs. Bring water, snacks and lunch. Awful or dangerous weather will cancel the hike but the hike will go with light or intermittent rain or the threat thereof. I will post a notice by 6:00 AM the day of the hike if cancelled.
