What we’re about

The Library Philosophy Group has been meeting twice a month for 14 years at the University Park Library in Irvine. We are a homegrown "philosophy cafe" like the trends in London or Paris--a salon of sorts.

We have studied western thought, current events and all manner of philosophy.
Recently we have studied Philosophy for Life and Other Dangerous Situations by Jules Evans and Luc Ferry’s A Brief History of Thought.

We will be discussing topics that people have always found intensely interesting and often don’t have any definitive answer to. Given the great success of science, what is the function of philosophy? Is there metaphysical truth? Is there a separate mental reality? What are the sources and limits of human knowledge? Does God exist? How do we explain evil? Which traditional religious beliefs are worth holding? Do we have reasons for believing that humans have a soul? Are computers capable of conscious thought? (Thanks to Gui)

It’s open to everyone.

There is a format so that everyone has a chance to speak.

We are starting this September with a year in Existentialism. The Existentialist’s Survival Guide, by Gordon Marino.

Come join our philosophy group.
