About us

We are Jakarta Writers.
Join the community! It doesn't matter if you just pick up pen and paper or if you are writing since years; it doesn't matter what and how often you write.

This group is perfect for all those interested in storytelling, and in exploring and developing their craft.

We are the biggest, first, most active, and most inclusive MeetUp community in Jakarta... and we invite you to join us! Everyone is welcome.

Jakarta Writers (former Jakarta Creatives) is the community to explore, practice, or enjoy all forms of writing and creativity in Jakarta. Other than regular writing events and workshops we do book clubs, book swaps, comedy events as well as occasionally attend museums and poetry open mics, watch movies, and much more!

Together with the group Jakarta Friends (which mostly focus on social activities) we are all about authentic connections in an uncomplicated and informal setting.

Together, we are creating an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome. This community is a convergence of people and cultures.

Over the past 3,5 years, with Jakarta Writers & Jakarta Friends we have had over 250 events with about 2,000 attendees! Everyone should always feel welcome to join disregarding from their ethnicity, nationality, religion, creed, age, language skills, gender identification, sexual orientation, background, ability, income, social status, or any other arbitrary trait.

We have a yearly membership fee to join our events. This is explained in detail in every event description. The membership fee is not expensive and gives access to all events, while guaranteeing that hosting events remains sustainable for the organisers. There's much more value to members in a yearly fee than in an event fee.

We guarantee to keep organising plenty of events and the fee is refundable if the group closes down or if there are no events for more than three months. You can attend the first event for a sneak peek price!

You can also connect via chat and social media:

You are invited to **join the group Jakarta Friends, too 👉🏼 https://www.meetup.com/jakarta-friends/** With Jakarta Friends we eat and drink together, play board games, talk business, socialize, do language exchanges, explore the city by walking and culinary tours, and much more!

We look forward to meet you at a next event!
Corrado & the team of co-organisers

An important note about this community: This group welcomes everyone who genuinely wants to connect. The organisers won't tolerate any of the following behaviours:

  • marketing promotions without checking with the admin first (including aggressive marketing strategies, pet trading, self-centered offers, non-relevant posts)
  • negativity and blaming (including spreading false information, criticizing without offering a honest feedback or alternative solutions)
  • harrassement, discrimination, intolerance, disrespectful behaviour
  • it's important that people respect RSVP at event, and are respectful of everyone's time and efforts in organising events
  • anyone who feels unsafe or unwelcome at an event is encouraged to report this to the organisers or to the Meetup help center

    Hello, Jakarta Writer! Are you a member of Jakarta Friends yet?
    Want to see pictures of past events? Take a look here! And feel free to upload a few pictures you might take at the event 😊

    JakWri (former Jakarta Creatives) and JakFri is the biggest, first, most active, and most inclusive MeetUp community in Jakarta... and we invite you to join us for this Fun Writing Challenge #7

    Everyone is always welcome to join our events. Our community is all about creating authentic in-person connections in this urban jungle. Come as you are... it’s the best version of yourself.

    ABOUT THE EVENT

    This event is a fun, communal event to train your creative writing muscle. It's easy and fun, and writers with every level of expertise and every kind of experience are welcome to join!

    This is how it works: Everyone will receive a prompt, and they will need to write a short piece based on that for about ~1h. After that, everyone will read or listen to what the others have written, and we will comment and discuss. We don't aim at criticizing, but at helping and elevating each other. Writing should be fun; writing together is even funnier! Sharing what you have written is optional. You can just join to unleash your creativity and follow the conversation on other's creative journeys.

    We meet for a circa 3 hour session at Bali Coffee House in Lebak Bulus for our creative writing challenges. We have ~30 minutes to set up and get into the mood, ~1 hour of quiet and individual writing, and ~1,5h to discuss our writings. The writing challenge is as follows:

    1. Prepare your writing kit (pen and paper, notebook, laptop, phone … take your pick)
    2. The theme for each writing challenge session will be different. (For example: “Fools". You can refer to anything you like, from April Fool’s Day to simply feeling silly for doing something.)
    3. You have only ~1 hour to write anything based on that theme, whether it’s a poem, a flash fiction, a short story, or just a rant.
    4. After that time, gather and start sharing what you have just written. (This is, of course, optional for those willing to do it.)
    5. At the end we will discuss our writing process, and what we liked in other's pieces. We don't want to criticize, but to help and support each others as writers!
    6. Just show up and dive into the challenge. Everyone will be working on their stuff, and we won't discuss it during writing. You’ll surprise yourself with what you can do in such a short time. Be on time.

    After the sharing session, you’re welcome to resume your writing mode or simply hang out and chat about writing or anything related. We can also share each other's texts and give feedback, if that's something someone would like to do.

    We have organised this event before! Take a look here:

    JakWri and JakFri is the biggest, first, most active, and most inclusive MeetUp community in Jakarta… and we invite you to join us for this SHUT! UP! AND! WRITE! #56 FULLY ONLINE

    Everyone is always welcome to join our events. Our community is all about creating authentic in-person connections in this urban jungle. Come as you are... it’s the best version of yourself.

    ABOUT THE EVENT

    In a nutshell: This event will be online! Just log in (with your browser on Google Meet -- link shared with registered attendees only) and get 90 minutes of writing done to kick-start your day! We will write in silence, everyone working on their own project. You don't need to switch the camera on, but you can if you need an extra push to be accountable. You can arrive any time between 05:00 AM and 06:00 AM WIB/Jakarta time (after 06:00 AM, I won't let anyone join the virtual room anymore). Just make sure you use the occasion to get some writing done! At 06:20-ish AM we will stop writing, switch on our camera, and each take a few minutes to introduce ourselves, and tell what we have done in the past 90 minutes.

    The aim is to have many of these online Shut! Up! And! Write! regularly, at different times of the day, to help each other get the writing done! These online series won't replace our in-person SUAW, which will still happen at least once a month.

    Cannot join this one because of the timing? Let me know what would be a suitable time for another online 90 minutes writing session!

    ~~~
    So, you want to be a writer? Then shut up and write! Writing is 0.01% "inspiration" and 99.99% getting down to it.
    We will meet for a 90 minutes writing session fully online.
    It doesn't matter if you are an established writer or if you are picking up pen and paper for the first time. Just show up, get down to it, and start writing. Everyone will be working on their own thing, and we won't talk during writing. If you need some prompt or suggestion on what to write, I'll be happy to give you some ideas.
    After the 90 minutes writing session session, we will stop writing and briefly share with each other what we have done. We can also share each other texts and give feedback, if that's something someone would like to do.
    The rules of the game:
    1. We aim to start together in order not to disrupt the process for everyone. Hovewer, for this online event, join can join anytime between 05:00 AM and 06:00 AM. After that, the virtual room will be closed.
    2. No talking during the writing allowed! After joining the virtual room, everyone will focus on their own writing
    3. You can take as many breaks as you want, of course
    We have organised this online event before. We have organised this event (in-person) many times before. See all of them here!
