BOOK CLUB: "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin

Details

We are the biggest, most active, and most inclusive MeetUp community in Jakarta…

…and we invite you to join us for this BOOK CLUB of "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin!

Everyone is always welcome to join our events. Our community is all about creating authentic in-person connections in this urban jungle.

Come as you are... it’s the best version of yourself.

ABOUT THE EVENT
The idea is very simple: we will meet and discuss the book. Everyone will receive a copy of the book as PDF beforehand for free (which we kindly ask not to share with everyone - this is a book discussion for educational purposes). Please reach out to the host to receive your free PDF and feel free to ask any question in the discussion section of the event page.

Everyone is encouraged to read the short book (in English, about 170 pages) beforehand to participate to the discussion. Coming without having read the book is possible, but it's just half the fun.

The host will give a short introduction about the book and guide through the discussion, which will be very informal and fun. Everyone is encouraged to share their thoughts and ask questions to the group. This event is introvert friendly! No one will be put on the spot or forced to speak. Just join and share your passion for literature, no matter how much you read.

This is a dream event for anyone who wishes to take a deep dive into literature and have a fun, social lunch time.

About the book
In a world where conformity suffocates individuality and freedom is traded for the illusion of order, Yevgeny Zamyatin’s We emerges as a hauntingly prescient dystopian novel that challenges the very essence of what it means to be human. Written in 1920, this groundbreaking work—often considered the precursor to Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World—paints a chilling vision of a totalitarian society where the individual is erased, and every thought, action, and desire is subordinated to the collective will.

We is not merely a story; it is a philosophical gauntlet thrown at the feet of complacency.

Join us for a discussion that aims to unravel the layers of Zamyatin’s masterpiece, exploring its relevance in our increasingly surveilled and standardized world. This is your invitation to question, to resist, and to tell the world that you're not just another number in a sea of data.

We have had several Book Clubs before! Take a look at these past events:

ABOUT THE VENUE
Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Jalan Cikini Raya No. 73, Cikini, Menteng, stands as a cultural oasis, pulsating with the spirit of Indonesia’s artistic heritage. Established in 1968 on the historic grounds of the former Taman Raden Saleh zoo, this 9-hectare complex, named after the legendary composer Ismail Marzuki, is a beacon for creativity, housing six modern theaters, galleries, a planetarium, and the revitalized Perpustakaan Jakarta library.

ABOUT THE HOST
Your host for this event, Ben, is a literature enthusiast eager to learn not only from texts but also from fellow readers' interpretations and personal experiences. He will guide everyone through the discussion for a memorable book club event.

VENUE NOTES - DIRECTION
We are planning on doing the Book Club outside, barring rain, as the place is full of spots where anyone can sit, discuss, slouch, and yes read. There are a handful of places we will choose from, depending on weather, availability, and attendees.

The organizer will wait nearby the entrance as we pick our preferred spot. If it happens to rain, there are also plenty of spots inside and an actual free library we can head into—with free registration.

If you happen to come late, we will leave a note in the comment section to help direct you to where we are.
