What we’re about
The Kanban Coaching Exchange (KCE) is intended to be a really great place to learn, get those burning questions off your chest and to make new friends. It follows in the footsteps of the Agile Coaching Exchange (ACE) which often has Kanban specific questions and topics, the KCE will provide a Kanban focused forum.
We pride ourselves in giving back to the Kanban community and so these exchanges are about:
- Connecting Kanban practitioners so that they can collaborate and work together in the future
- Creating a learning environment
- Providing a place for newer practitioners and coaches to seek support
- Exchanging coaching skills and experiences
- Developing new concepts collaboratively that we can use when coaching
- Developing ideas that will support the discipline of coaching
- Having fun, sharing, and collaboration
- Improving the understanding of Kanban in the wider community
The target audience is you, peers that you work with or have worked with, Kanban practitioners, and anybody with potential to be coaches or good Kanban practitioners. Please feel free to bring others along, especially people from your current workplace/engagement who could benefit from this kind of sharing event.
The format will be a talk by an invited speaker, followed by open discussion based on what the group feels would be the best topics to spend our time on

About the Talk
This talk aims at exploring the Kanban method from a Knowledge-Centric perspective, aiming not to contest but to complement Discovery and Delivery Kanban practices.We introduce a novel approach to categorizing work items based on the knowledge to be discovered, using a Complexity Profile (CP) matrix and the Knowledge Discovery Funnel, that serves as a map for acquiring missing knowledge.
The role of the Kanban board is reimagined as a critical tool for managing the knowledge discovery process, serving not only to segment work but to guide the journey from initial exploration to delivery. This perspective accentuates the significance of experiments and a pull system in managing work in progress with a keen focus on the discovery-delivery continuum.
Through the use of learning curves, we present a method to quantify the cumulative growth of knowledge, shedding light on project complexity, team adaptability, and lifecycle management. This analytical approach fosters informed decision-making regarding resource allocation, training, and process adjustments.
Addressing the challenge of forecasting project completion times in the face of inherent uncertainty, we advocate for a probabilistic forecasting model based on Reference Class Forecasting (RCF). This method contrasts with traditional forecasting methods by leveraging historical data about rates of knowledge discovery from similar projects with the unique learning and problem-solving aspects of the dynamics project.
Importantly, we argue for the integration of Knowledge-Centric Metrics with traditional Flow Metrics to provide a holistic view of a process. While Flow Metrics quantify tangible logistics, Knowledge-Centric Metrics address the intangible aspects, offering insights into the knowledge gaps, cognitive load, and overall efficiency of the knowledge discovery process. Together, these metrics provide a comprehensive framework for understanding and improving practices, bridging the gap between tangible logistics and the intangible aspects of knowledge work.
This talk invites Lean, Kanban, and Agile practitioners to embrace a Knowledge-Centric perspective, enhancing the Kanban method with deeper insights into the knowledge work.About the Speaker

He is an expert in managing successful and cost-effective complex software projects, an Accredited Kanban Consultant (AKC) and Brickell Key Award 2015 Finalist. As coach, his major engagements have been with Unum and Bosch.
