COASTAL WALK: BROADSTAIRS to HISTORIC RAMSGATE
Details
SUNDAY COASTAL WALK:- Enjoy a summers day out with a coastal walk from Broadstairs to the beautiful historic town of 'Royal' Ramsgate in the company of great friends!
FRESH AIR: Give up the city streets for a day and breathe some fresh air. Improve your overall fitness levels. This walk is an approximately 5 mile scenic route along the coast. We will walk along the low chalk clifftop promenades and beaches (StoneBay, Viking Bay) that characterise the 'Viking Coastal Trail' in Kent and deliver dramatic, sweeping views across the English Channel.
History of Ramsgate:
It took over 100 years for the construction of Ramsgate Harbour. It began in 1749 and was completed in about 1850. The Harbour has the unique distinction of being the only Royal Harbour in the United Kingdom.
Ramsgate harbour was granted its royal status in 1821 by King George VI which sparked its transformation into a fashionable resort attracting many wealthy people from London. The Georgian and Victorian architecture, that remains, bear witness to Ramsgate fashionable past.
At the end of the walk, you can, if you wish, visit the largest wetherspoons pub in the country which occupies at the Royal Victoria Pavilion. This is a fully restored Grade II listed building, designed in the style of Robert Adams in 1903. Allow yourself time to enjoy Ramsgate andselect a late train for your return to London.
Broadstairs:
Broadstairs was Charles Dickens's favourite holiday resort. He stayed there with his family for a minimum of one month every summer, from 1839 when he was becoming established as a successful writer, through until 1851.
Come to Broadstairs early to enjoy the town and beach before the walk, or come to the earlier walking event from Margate if you want to challenge /test yourself. Click here for the earlier walk.
WALK START POINT: Broadstairs Station.
WALK END POINT: At a very large pub (Royal Victoria Pavilion) on Harbour Parade in Ramsgate beachfront. It is said to be the largest Wetherspoons in the world!!
WALK DISTANCE: Approx 5 miles at a moderate pace. There are some gradients, and therefore you need to be reasonably fit.
Social Event:
Our walks are social walks, where the emphasis is on meeting new people, enjoying nature, healthy exercise, and fresh air. Our walks are not interrupted with running commentaries or historical lectures, although occasionally features of significance may be pointed out. As such our walks will be continuous with few stops and it is your responsibilty to keep walkers ahead in view and to follow the direction of the walk. We always end the walk at a pub with a convivial atmosphere where the socialising can continue. Be sure to join us in the pub for the whole experience!
A £5 meetup organiser's contribution is payable if you do not hold the Ken's Events Card. The walk is free for holders of this card.
Please arrive in good time to allow opportunity to use toilets at the start of the walk as there may not be any toilet breaks available during the walk.

RAIN POLICY: Our walks normally go ahead as planned even if it rains.
GENERAL RISKS for all WALKS: In the walks in this group we use; country stiles, pavements, cross busy roads, public parkland, paths alongside water, bridlepaths, country lanes and other established paths and tracks through woodland, bush and countryside. Wear good sturdy shoes/walking boots. To avoid insects, thorns, and stinging nettles, bare legs are not recommended. Take care as surfaces may be uneven, there may be low branches and some paths are also used by joggers and cyclists and sometimes cars (country lanes). Some tracks may be muddy and slippery. On occasion we may encounter wild and farm animals. If you require insurance for these walks you must arrange this yourself. No small children or large dogs please.
