Tarot Divination and Vision-Logic in Light of Wilber’s Integral Perspective

In this presentation, local psychologist and tarot scholar Dr. Art Rosengarten will briefly introduce a modern, psychological approach to the Tarot from a Jungian orientation, and then draw parallels to the integral perspective with respect to vision-logic, addressing what he believes can open the modern Tarot to 21st century models, aided by the wider insights of Ken Wilber. Slides and experiential demonstration will be offered.

In the 20th century, scholarship and innovation of the Renaissance-based Tarot cards, a collection of 78 archetypal symbols popularly used for divination and fortune-telling, took a distinctly psychological turn.

The influence of Freud, and to a far larger extent Jung turned many serious practitioners away from the occult and its many controversies, to consider these captivating images as symbols of transformation, its so-called Major Arcana to be a map of higher consciousness, and its method of employment—divination—a spiritually-laden therapeutic procedure of active imagination that by its very nature set conditions for synchronicities to occur, along with expansive perception of layered levels of subjective experience, accessible through intuition and the symbolic amplification of tarot imagery, believed to stem from what is widely known as the perennial philosophy.

Strikingly, this very process commonly called “tarot card reading” done properly both instills and mirrors the pivotal stage of consciousness that integral philosopher Ken Wilber calls “vision-logic.” Wilber contends that we are at a unique point of human evolution, one in which both men and women have completed their differentiation from nature and that reintegration is about to begin. For Wilber, this integration will take pace in a cognitive developmental stage called vision-logic, which follows our current stage of rational or formal operational thinking. Contrary to the limitations of rational thinking, vision-logic can hold in mind contradictions, it can unify opposites, it is dialectical, intuitive, synchronistic, and nonlinear. In vision-logic, Wilber sees the possibilities of a “truly planetary culture.”

DIRECTIONS: From Rancho Santa Fe Road, turn onto El Camino Del Norte. Go 6/10 of a mile, then turn Left onto Val Sereno. When Val Sereno dead ends at Via de Caballo, turn Right. At the dead end cul de sac, turn Right at a large wooden sign with house numbers and follow the narrow extension down the hill. At the bottom of the hill, turn Left. Our half of the townhouse is at the end, 3197, double green doors.

Parking is limited. One car can park in front of our end of the duplex. One car can park to the right of my duplex neighbor. Three cars can park in the guest slots before the townhouse. The rest of you will have to park at the top of the hill before the wooden sign and then walk down the hill. I suggest that you bring a flash light to return up the hill to your car. Sorry for this inconvenience.
