Sycamore Canyon Trail To The Claremont Loop Ramada

Join us for a nice hike up the Sycamore Canyon Trail from Thompson Creek, through portions of the Johnson's Pasture, up to the Gazebo atop the Claremont Loop and then back across to Gale Mountain before we return to Thompson Creek . This hike is a nice variation of the more typical Claremont Loop hike and offers better views, a slightly tougher workout and slightly more mileage.

The first segment of the the trail is a fairly STEEP mostly single track hiking trail that somewhat resembles the old Garcia Trail, though not quite as steep. We'll climb 578 feet in .8 of a mile before we reach the East Pomello Drive fire road.

Once we catch our breath, we'll turn left (west) and continue on to Johnson's Pasture Rd. From there, we'll hook a right and follow Johnsons Pasture Rd northerly to the shade structure gazebo where we will take a break before heading back.

On our return, we will detour across the Gale Mtwy fire road to the tower atop Gale Mountain and then follow the steep but mostly paved access road back down to Thompson Creek, where we will walk back to our starting point.

The hike is about 6.5 to 7.0 miles total with about 1250 feet elevation gain. Be prepared to stretch out your legs a little and have some fun. Be sure to bring plenty of water and an energy snack, even if the weather is cool, because you will likely work up a good sweat.

PARKING: Since the trailhead is located at the north end of Higginbotham Park in Claremont, you can park in front of the park on the residential street if you prefer. But an actual parking lot is available at the Thompson Creek Parking lot located at 2471 N. Indian Hill Blvd, in Claremont. It's a short walk on the Thompson Creek Trail westerly to the Higginbotham Park restroom where we will meet, near the Sycamore Canyon trailhead.
