San Lorenzo Valley High School, 7105 Highway 9, Felton, CA, USLevel: Moderate (2B) 8.5 mi, 1150 ft gain
Meet: 9:15 AM at San Lorenzo Valley High School Parking just before the Softball Field, (37.0609270000, -122.0802410000)
Description: Come and enjoy this mostly shady hike.
We will hike approximately 8.5 miles with 1150 ft gain through dense redwood forest, blanketed with redwood sorrel and dotted with California native wild ginger. Starting from San Lorenzo Valley High School parking lot just before the Softball Field, we will take High School Trail to Fall Creek Trail. We will then hike along Fall Creek, via Fall Creek North Fork Trail, to Barrel Mill Site for lunch. The site was used during the 19th Century to make redwood barrels to ship lime produced here to San Francisco.
After lunch, we will mostly retrace our steps after making a detour to see the massive lime kilns, which produced lime used in mortar and plaster.
We will hike at a moderate pace, with stops for points of interest. Possible hazards include ticks, yellowjackets/wasps, poison oak, rattlesnakes, and fallen trees. Please be aware and look out for these as we are hiking. Adverse weather or trail conditions may shorten or cancel the hike. We practice "leave no trace" and carry out everything we carry in.
Cold drinks and light snacks after the hike (optional).
Please see park brochure for more information about the park, its history and trail map: Henry_Cowell_Redwoods_State_Park
