LoMAZ is going away at the beginning of August 2026. Come and join us for a weekend break to Whitby in Yorkshire!

This event is part of our Dracula Daily series of events to connect to the book Dracula running from May to November 2026. See https://www.meetup.com/london-museums-a-z-lomaz/events/312216865/

You can sign up for Dracula Daily here: https://draculadaily.substack.com/about

Mina Murray's Journal, 11th August:

For a moment or two I could see nothing, as the shadow of a cloud obscured St. Mary's Church and all around it. Then as the cloud passed I could see the ruins of the abbey coming into view, and as the edge of a narrow band of light as sharp as a sword-cut moved along, the church and churchyard became gradually visible.

This trip to Whitby is NOT a planned excursion and guided tour. People will book their own transport and their own accommodation.

The official LoMAZ days will be:
Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th August.

You can extend your time either side of this weekend if you would like to and you are free to arrive and leave whenever you want to.

Suggestions will be made in the event WhatsApp group of what to see and people can go and do what they would like to.

Whitby Abbey is a key landmark and more about Whitby and Dracula can be read here:

The WhatsApp group can also be used to co-ordinate and figure out best travel plans and activities.

We will not all be doing the same thing and people may want to go and do something on their own too.

GETTING THERE:
Train: Travelling from London, you will need to change at York. A return from London to Whitby costs around £120. From London just to York a return appears to be about £65 to £100 (see Uber below).

The hosts have booked on these trains and will be getting an uber to and from York in a car pool:

Outbound Friday, August 7
01h 51m, 0 changes
Depart 11:00 London Kings Cross
Grand Central Railway
Arrive 12:51 York

Return Sunday, August 9
01h 53m, 0 changes
Depart 18:17 York
London North Eastern Railway
Arrive 20:10 London Kings Cross

It is about £68 return.

Uber: It may be easier to get an uber in a group from York to Whitby rather than take a connecting train. This costs about £70 and could be divided between 4 people. This can be planned in the WhatsApp group.

Coach: National Express run day time and overnight coaches from London to Whitby with a change at Leeds. This takes between 9 and 10 hours. The price of a return is currently £27 (at 14/04/26).

ACCOMMODATION:
There are various hotels, hostels and airbnbs to stay in while you are in Whitby, so you will need to book your own accommodation in or around the town. You may also wish to stay further out and travel in for one or two days.

Some accommodation sites are booking.com and airbnb.

You can discuss accommodation locations in the WhatsApp group and comments below.

WHATSAPP GROUP FOR PRE-TRIP CHAT:
You will see the link to the WhatsApp group when you sign up in the comments section below. Please note that joining this WhatsApp group will make your phone number visible to other members. We also have a main LoMAZ WhatsApp group that you are welcome to join after your first event.

PLEASE READ:

LoMAZ events are run by volunteers. This event has an attendee limit as we prefer a smaller, friendlier group. If you RSVP but can no longer attend, please change your RSVP as soon as possible, otherwise you will be marked as a 'no show'.

We remove members from the group who:

repeatedly sign up for events then 'no show'.

repeatedly change their RSVP to 'No'.

are on the event waitlist or have not RSVPd but turn up anyway.

Please see the About Us section for more information about the group and how it works.

Thank you for your interest in the group & being part of LoMAZ.
