Okay, so I'm trying this again (with a few more caveats), trying to see if People are interested in a midweek hike in the South Bay. It's a 3-4 mile, 300 ft elevation gain hike in Portuguese Bend Reserve, suitable for beginners, Dogs on a leash okay.
Our goal is to go at a decent pace, so we get back to our cars just after sunset (at most 2.5 miles an hour). Along the way, there should be flowers, views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. If we're lucky, there may be something interesting in the water below.
Bring: comfortable shoes and clothing, and sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen). I recommend 1 liter of water and a windbreaker in case the late afternoon wind picks up.
The nearest bathroom is a Porto Potty about a 1/4 mile from the trailhead.
The easiest way to get here: Take 405 to Crenshaw Blvd exit and head south on Crenshaw until it ends about 9 miles away. Park in Del Cerro Park or on the road (keep an eye out for restrictions).
This is a reverse hike. We go down and then come back up to our cars.
Again, I am trying to see how much interest there is in a monthly midweek hike in the South Bay area. I do not recommend anyone living north of the 105 or east of the 605 freeway trying to attend this meetup (and if you live along this boundary, I recommend you really think about this). Driving on the 405 is not easy in rush hour traffic. If you're heading south on the 405, traffic can be a nightmare. Heading north is a bit easier, but not much. Any estimates for reaching the trailhead should be doubled due to rush hour conditions. Please keep this in mind if you want to attend.
