This, her mother has told her, is the only way to get a "louding voice" -- the ability to speak for herself and decide her own future. But instead, Adunni's father sells her to be the third wife of a local man who is eager for her to bear him a son and heir. When Adunni runs away to the city, hoping to make a better life, she finds that the only other option before her is servitude to a wealthy family. As a yielding daughter, a subservient wife, and a powerless slave, Adunni is told, by words and deeds, that she is nothing. But while misfortunes might muffle her voice for a time, they cannot mute it. And when she realizes that she must stand up not only for herself, but for other girls, for the ones who came before her and were lost, and for the next girls, who will inevitably follow, she finds the resolve to speak, however she can--in a whisper, in song, in broken English--until she is heard

Frequently asked questions

A book club for women is a space where women gather to discuss books they have read. These clubs offer a supportive environment to explore diverse topics, share perspectives, and meet like-minded readers.

You can search for women-focused book clubs in your area on Meetup by filtering groups. This allows you to discover local chapters or online gatherings that fit your schedule and preferences.

Yes, women's book clubs often welcome beginners. These clubs are focused on creating inclusive spaces where members can freely share and grow, regardless of prior knowledge or experience.

Expect enriching discussions on a variety of literary works. Members share insights, engage in debates, and enjoy a community-centered experience, enhancing both their social and reading lives.

Generally, these clubs are inclusive of all women. They focus on creating supportive spaces for diverse voices, ensuring all participants feel welcomed and valued in the discussions.

Absolutely, you can join multiple book clubs. This allows you to experience different themes, authors, and genres by participating in various group discussions simultaneously.

Meeting frequency varies. Some clubs convene weekly, others monthly. You can examine individual group schedules to find ones that suit your availability.

RSVPing is typically required for group events to help organizers manage the logistics. Confirming attendance ensures a well-organized gathering catered to attendees.

Genres vary widely, covering fiction, non-fiction, mystery, romance, and more. Each club defines its reading list based on member interests or runs themed series to bring fresh perspectives.

Both options exist. Some women’s book clubs meet in-person, others opt for online sessions to accommodate different preferences. Check each club's format before joining.

To start, create a group on Meetup, outline your club’s focus, and set meeting times. Inviting members through social media or local ads can establish your initial group base.

Most book clubs on Meetup are free, but some may require participants to share costs for book purchases or event logistics. Always check with individual groups for details.

While book clubs offer rich discussions, not every literary need may be covered. Diverse book interests mean exploring multiple groups could enrich your overall experience.

Meetup offers the platform, but actual event planning and organization are handled by individual Group leaders. They choose the structure and content of each gathering.

Participation often depends on how much you're willing to engage. Being active in discussions can enhance your experience and help you gain more from the club.
