Join educator and GIS professional Shawn Morgan for a casual conversation about the state of GIS education in Canada, where to find new hires, and how to keep your own skills sharp as the field changes. **Speaker: Shawn Morgan** For nearly 30 years, Shawn has helped organizations around the globe understand and leverage GIS technology. A veteran educator, he has taught for major industry software companies and leading academic institutions, including Fleming College, the Southern African Wildlife College, the University of Waterloo, Conestoga College, and Durham College. Mob Programming

Let’s do some coding together at a cafe! No more working alone in the weekend. Here, we write code together. And I mean together together. Not occupying-the-same-space-but-separate together. Here’s how it works: Jennifer brings her mobile app project, tells everyone that it is like Pinterest for recipes and she’d like to work on the nav bar. Paul and Chloe think Jennifer's project is fascinating, and they join the group. They gather around Jennifer’s laptop and work on the nav bar for 2 hours. Jennifer is the one typing out the code while Paul and Chloe research, brainstorm, and offer suggestions. If you’re feeling stuck on your own project or need a motivation boost, bring it to mob programming! Want to learn by watching how others code and solve problems? Join someone else’s project at this event! Oh and we love your half-done projects that you are a bit embarrassed to share. November's Book: Wild Dark Shore

Do you like s’mores? Maybe you’ve never had a s’mores. Either way this is the place to be for dollar s’mores. But you’ve got to roast the marshmallows over an open fire yourself which is the best part. Not mention you’ll be meeting other people in a social environment. $1 (cash only please) gets you two crackers, a piece of milk chocolate and a marshmallow on a skewer. For those of you who have never made your own or aren’t that skilled I will teach you how. And yes you can have more than one!

Legacy Code Doesn't Have to Suck

Say "legacy software" in a room full of developers and watch the faces drop. We tend to picture old, fragile code that nobody understands, nobody wants to touch, and everybody hopes to avoid. And to be fair, that's often exactly what it is But here's the thing: legacy software is software that survived. It makes money, it has real users, and it's been doing its job for years. That's more than most shiny new projects can say In this talk we'll look at how to approach a legacy project without dread, how to find the quick wins that build momentum, and how to gradually turn a codebase people avoid into one they actually want to work on. Being stuck with ugly, boring code isn't a law of nature.
