'Historic Camden Treasure Hunt' - can you find the treasure?

'Historic Camden Treasure Hunt' - can you find the treasure?

Sat, Jul 11, 12:30 PM
From The London Cultureseekers Group
4.6

Come along on Saturday 11th July for treasure hunt around historic Camden! The treasure hunts are a good way to get to know an area of London whilst meeting new people. **About the area** Laid out as a residential district from 1791, Camden Town became an important location during the early development of the railways, which reinforced its position on the London canal network. It was where goods were transported off the tracks and onto the roads by some of London's 250,000 workhorses. The whole area was adapted to a transportation function: the Roundhouse (1846), Camden Lock and the Stables were examples of this. Up to at least the mid-20th century, Camden Town was considered an "unfashionable" locality, today its very trendy area with lots of shops, a market and a popular place to eat out. **How it works** Come along at 1:30pm and you will be randomly divided into teams of 3 people (or you can choose your own team beforehand). For fairness, any London Guides or Blue Badge Tour Guides won't be allowed to take part. Then each team will be given 15-20 written clues which you have to find the answers for. It's up to your team to work together to find the answers. The answers will be found on blue plaques or statues. You can answer them in any order and you will be provided with a map of the area to help you. It's not a race, so you can take your time getting to know Camden. **Prizes** The team to get the most correct answers and then return to base (a local pub or cafe) will win book vouchers for Waterstones bookshops of £10 per person. If more than one team gets the top score, there will be a tie break question back at the pub. A £5 gift voucher per person will be given to each member of the team coming in second place and prizes will be given to each member of the team with the best team name. **Cost** Its £7 per person to take part (payable by cash or credit card on the day), apart from Full Members where it is free! **Become a Full Member** To become a Full Member (£14 a year), either: \- Pay cash at an event \- Pay via Bank Transfer \(TSB Bank plc\, Sort code: 77\-66\-65\, Account no: 00030809, Account name: Cultureseekers) \- Pay via credit card on the day or in advance \([https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QLAX8AUI](https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QLAX8AUI)) \- go to PayPal \- [https://www.paypal.com/uk/](https://www.paypal.com/uk/), then click on 'Pay & Get Paid‘, then click on 'Send Money’, put in the email address: [general@cultureseekers.org](mailto:general@cultureseekers.org) in the 'Send Money' box, then 'Next' and then enter the amount to pay. Click 'Next', then 'Goods & Services', then 'For Friends & Family', then 'Continue' Benefits of becoming a Full Member [here...](https://www.meetup.com/london_cultureseekers/photos/22974682/531979527/) We will be marking the scores back at the pub at 4:30pm, so it should all be over by 5:00pm. Look out for the red & blue 'London Cultureseekers' group sign/flag. If you can't see us, please text. Look forward to seeing you there! Tim’s walks: the hidden art galleries of London

Tim’s walks: the hidden art galleries of London

Thu, Jul 9, 10:30 AM
From Paul and Tim's Greater London Talks and Walks
4.8

Escape the heat and join Tim for a walk around some of the lesser known (but air conditioned!) of London. We’ll meet for tea in a very famous gallery, the Wallace Collection. (If you’ve not visited I would recommend you go round the exhibition beforehand as it’s one of the great art collections in London. ) We won’t visit the Wallace but instead we’ll nip round the corner to the Brown collection where one of the Young British Artists of the 1990s developed his own particular style, building on and transforming the work of the great European masters. Then we walk through Marylebone and Mayfair dropping into a couple of galleries; one devoted to modern conceptual ‘pop’ art and the other packed full of nineteenth century impressionism especially works of Pisarro, a bit of Chagall and even a Picasso. Then on to the star of the show: an exhibition of portraits of the Elizabethan court. There’s all the great political figures there including four portraits of Elizabeth I and even a possible portrait of Shakespeare. Afterwards we’ll walk past the new Banksy sculpture and end near Charing Cross station, probably in a pub ! Lots of opportunities for discussion and disagreement and hopefully the inspiration to go and visit lots more of the galleries in London Cost is £12 payable by cash, card, PayPal or bank transfer. Phone number is O7846899156 for on the day emergencies

Notting Hill Gate Picture Hunt

Notting Hill Gate Picture Hunt

Mon, Jul 13, 12:30 PM
From London Urban Adventurers
4.7

Meet outside Notting Hill Gate Central line station exit 1. For sun watchers, this is the shady side. How are your detecting skills? Welcome to another of our many outside Picture Hunts this year. This time, the event will be centred around shop fronts, buildings and features around Notting Hill Gate. There’s no crossing of busy roads. If you’re new to Picture Hunts, check photos below and previous events for winners and clue sheets. Pkease aim to turn up for 1:00-1:30 when teams are being arranged. As usual, portions of the road are split up into four areas where teams search for the locations of photographed items in the street, buildings or shop windows, and then record where they found them. Picture Hunts are a great new way to get up to speed with slices of London history while sleuthing around the area. Everyone is presented with twenty partial photos of objects around an area. Your team mission is to find them. Some well known, some well unknown! This makes Picture Hunts more interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills. You will also have a map of the area. It will be sub-divided into four sections, P, Q, R, S. Each photo will come from one of these. Four players max per team, but the lower number teams get a point per player start from the biggest team. For example, four teams of one, two, three and four. Four player team, no advantage, (the biggest and theoretically the more knowledge between them, except it doesn't always work like that). Three player team, one point start. Two player team, two point start. One player team, three point start. Scores are always close and around the 15-20 points mark. How many players do you want in your team? There's a dilemma! The clipboard holder enters one of the letters to note its area location. Dead simple, right? 90 minutes to do the hunt. We have the usual prizes of chocolate, including some great new varieties. There is also an equal prize for the funniest team name. Names win prizes too! So there’s everything to play for. We mark up at a pub finish point to be confirmed. Hunts are good fun and the proven experience so far is that members get to know each other better after working in teams as you all have to communicate. Great icebreakers. This is what Meetup is all about. Come and join us. There is a £7 cash/card charge for this event. Contact number on the day is 07422334411 if your transport is delayed. **If you can’t make it, please cancel using the “Edit RSVP Button”.** **Your consideration is greatly appreciated.**
