Description: **One weekend of instruction, practice and feedback by a team with trained canoe teachers. Learn the strokes and maneuvers to safely and adventurously enjoy canoeing in fast or slow moving creeks and rivers.** **Opportunity to join us for follow-up trips to occur in PA, MA, NJ and NY.** **Learn the terminology and practice strokes & techniques for:** **Stopping** **Ferries** **Eddy turns** **Peel outs** **River reading** **Learn basic swiftwater safety:** **Self-rescue** **Safety gear & use** **River hazards** **Course includes camping fees & breakfasts/dinners for the weekend, plus free boat rental all season for AMC trips. Members price extends to current KCCNY & AMC members. Returning students upgrading their skills attend at half price. Teens welcomed if accompanied by a participating parent or legal guardian also attending as a student.** **For those registering for Solo Canoe instruction, we require some paddling experience plus instructor approval. For those registering for Tandem Canoe instruction, no prior experience needed. You can let leaders know if you are interested in solo or tandem canoe instruction in a message or after application submittal and subsequent vetting discussion. Must be able to lift 35-55 pound boats with some help. Must be comfortable swimming in deep, moving water while wearing a personal flotation device. Must be able to sit in a boat for several hours at a time.** **All days of the weekend of instruction are essential and required. Apply here. Those approved will be registered . Classes fill fast.** **Friends or family might opt to take this similar course as kayakers, since we share the location, date and camping fun. Students arrange their own car pools to pick up boats & gear at barn, where we fit you for equipment and give crucial guidance on how to safely car top a boat.** **Questions welcomed. Looking for a day full of both kayaking and being with fellow volunteers supporting our public program? This trip has been scheduled for those volunteering for the 3:00 PM embayment shift, so you can get a morning paddle in before volunteering. Little Island is a no landing trip. We will paddle a short distance each way, perhaps 2 miles, to Little Island, a NYC park suspended over the Hudson on concrete pillars. We'll paddle under the park, into the "concrete jungle", before heading home **PREREQUISITES TO RSVP**: 1. Promise to volunteer with our public programming in 2026. Note, if the trip is full, preference will be given to those on the afternoon embayment shift. AND 2. Completed either 1 training in 2025/2026 with the craft you will be taking or completed a new volunteer session. AND 3. Completed a wet exit in 2025/2026 and show control of your kayak/SUP **Craft**: * Sit on Top - allowed, but limited by the embayment * Sea Kayak - only if completed a wet exit in 2026 and show control of your kayak. NOTE - if you have done a training but not a wet exit yet, we can do one before the trip. Message me please to discuss. * SUP - only if completed 2+ mile round trip or with SUP trainer approval * OC1/OC2 and Surfski can't maneuver under Little Island **Come prepared:** * Change of clothes * Water in a reusable bottle * Sun protection - hat, sunglasses, sunscreen * Anything else you may need to spend 3 hours on the water! **Timeline:** Start readying: 09:30 AM Briefing (cutoff): 10:00 AM Move boats to water: 10:15 AM Depart HCCB: 10:30 AM Arrive destination: 11:20 AM Explore under little island Return briefing: 11:55 AM Depart: 12:00 PM Arrive HCCB: 12:50 PM End of trip: 01:20 PM Eat lunch Embayment 03:00 PM Slack is 11:32 AM. Beforehand, the river is ebbing, with a peak ebb at 07:34 AM of -2.2 knots. After, the river is flooding, with a peak flood at 01:52 PM of 0.9 knots. Sunrise is at 05:28 AM. Sunrise is at 08:26 PM. \-\-\-\- HCCB is completely volunteer run. Our guides generously take time out of their busy schedules to run trips and trainings. Here are our guidelines about cancelations and no-shows: \ *For a trip, please cancel prior to 8:00 PM the day before* the trip. \ *For a training, please cancel at least 6 hours* before the training. If you do not cancel before the cancelation cutoff time, you will be marked as a no-show. Hosts reserve the right to deprioritize you on waitlists after the second no-show of the year.

We will be assisting Urban Swim PRIDE open water swim from Downtown Boathouse to Pier 40. **Please do not be late.** The swim starts with or without us, and the swimmers need our guidance. Please eat before you come and/or bring snacks. Please do not RSVP if you do not pass the prerequisites **PREREQUISITES TO RSVP:** * You received an invitation from Urban Swim, the host, or one of HCCB guides to participate * If you have volunteered with us in the last 2 years and completed an intermediate trip, message host for an invitation **Craft:** * Sea Kayak * Sit on top (we will be going agaisnt current, you must be very 💪) * SUP if approved by Urban Swim. **Come prepared:** * Sunscreen * Water in a reusable bottle. **PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BEFORE SIGNING UP!** Its the 4 of July weekend so lets paddle a day before the holiday. **Please get there early to park, change and be ready to launch at 11:30 am.** This is a very scenic paddle of islands, a light house, shore birds depending which direction we go. We may crossover to LI, Sands Point beach. In the past we saw dolphins & occasionally seals. Please be flexible, conditions determine where we go once we're out in the sound. Tides at New Rochelle - Hi tide 1:50 pm, 7.09'; Lo tide 7:43 pm, 1.02', ebb 11:23 am, slack 2:46 pm, sunset 8:23 pm, moon waning gibbous. **Meetup will not let me change the map pin.** **The kayak dock is near the exit of the Orchard Beach parking lot on Park Dr.** *We do not launch from the beach.* Note the Parking fee has gone up: $12 on weekends, $10 during the week. Bathrooms are by the boardwalk (**straight back in the parking lot to the right of the playground**) go there 1st after entering and then proceed to the launch area. Unload your boat on the side in the grass, do not block the launch area, then park your car in the lot. Intermediate paddlers only please, This is not for beginners, sea kayaks 14' minimum. No SOT's, SUP's, Inflatables, rafts, or pets - surf skis OK. You should be able to paddle 10+ miles in a day at a pace and know how to paddle with waves, winds, wakes, boat traffic and how to self/assist rescue. Approximate distance to be covered 10-14 miles. We will be crossing boat channels, please stay together and cross in a pod so we are visible to the boat traffic and give them a way around us. Weather can change at any time so please be flexible as paddle conditions can change. Bring water, lunch, snacks, change of clothes anything you need for a day trip. Pack a change of clothes in a dry bag in your kayak and have a polar fleece to keep warm in case of a swim. Waivers must be signed if you haven't paddled with us this season. My cell if needed (845) 548-2198. Please be kind, anyone who signs up and is a no-show 2X w/o changing their RSVP will be put on a waitlist for future outings and only allowed if space permits. Check back the Friday before to see anticipated weather.
