Mercè Rodoreda Book Club Series: Session 3 — With Rebecca Simpson

This year, Backstory is launching a **five-month Book Club series dedicated to Mercè Rodoreda**, one of the most renowned Catalan writers of the 20th century. The series runs from January to May, in parallel with the CCCB exhibition *Rodoreda, a forest*, and is designed to introduce English-speaking readers to Rodoreda’s work through its translations. Across five monthly sessions, we will read five key works by Rodoreda, guided by **translators and scholars who have played a central role in bringing her writing into English**. Each session combines close reading, contextual discussion, and open conversation, always in an accessible, non-academic format. Her translations of poems by Mercè Rodoreda (1908–1983) appear in *Shearsman Magazine*, *Modern Poetry in Translation*, *AGNI Magazine* and *New England Review*. Other recent translation projects concern the poetry of Mireia Calafell (1980) and Blai Bonet (1926–1997). Support from the **Institut Ramon Llull (Generalitat de Catalunya)** has helped make this work possible. As a writer, Rebecca is the originator and author of various opera libretti, including *Juana*, with music by composer Enric Palomar (Oper Halle, Germany, and Teatre Romea, Barcelona, 2005), and *Sky Disc*, with music by composer Ramon Humet (Oper Halle, 2013).

Literatura y desplazamiento

Este ciclo busca analizar algunas obras de distintas geografías donde la migración, la ocupación del territorio y el desplazamiento forzado provoquen un cuestionamiento de las bio(tanato)políticas de los estados modernos, con su anverso de patriarcocapitalismo de barbarie, colonialidad y racismo. En las sesiones de febrero, indagaremos acerca de la colonialidad portuguesa en Mozambique y de la identidad y el género de las subjetividades sometidas a este proceso. En la primera reunión analizaremos fragmentos del libro 'Hacia un feminismo decolonial' de María Lugones, editado por [@eternacadenciaesp](https://www.instagram.com/eternacadenciaesp/). En la segunda sesión, conversaremos de 'Cuaderno de memorias coloniales' de la escritora Isabela Figueiredo, editado por [@librosdelasteroide](https://www.instagram.com/librosdelasteroide/). El libro se presenta de esta manera: En Mozambique, a principios de los años setenta, una niña de padres portugueses empieza a descubrir el mundo de los adultos mientras es testigo de las injusticias que la rodean. Isabela Figueiredo relata en estas excepcionales memorias su paso de la infancia a la adolescencia en Lourenço Marques –la actual Maputo–, la compleja relación con su padre y su marcha a Portugal durante la convulsa etapa de descolonización. La autora revela sin tapujos la violencia y el racismo feroz y normalizado y, ya en Portugal, el peso que le supondría su condición de "retornada". ¡Les esperamos! 🤗

But by coming together to read, to educate ourselves, to share what we learn with friends and family, and to take action in our corner of the world we can be a small part of the wave of change humanity desperately needs. Sound like something you want to be a part of? We’d love to have you. Join the Climate Action Book Club this month to read the activist handbook ‘Emergent Strategy’ by Adrienne Marie Brown. She calls it 'a guidebook for getting in right relationship with change, using our own nature and that of creatures beyond human as our teachers.' This event is free, but please get your copy from the wonderful English bookstore that hosts our book club meetings, Backstory. To cover Meetup fees, we also request a €1 donation per attendee. Memoria de la resistencia en Perú y Chile

Este taller está diseñado para quienes deseen profundizar en la historia contemporánea de Perú y Chile, dos países marcados por el impacto del imperialismo estadounidense, la represión política y las luchas armadas. Cada sesión se centrará en una novela distinta, utilizando su narrativa como una puerta de entrada para reflexionar críticamente sobre procesos históricos complejos, como las dictaduras latinoamericanas, las guerrillas de resistencia y las dinámicas de memoria, justicia e impunidad. También se abordarán las diversas formas de violencia que atraviesan estas historias, con especial atención a las que afectan a las mujeres, invitando a una reflexión profunda sobre los legados de estas realidades en la actualidad.🔥 Juan Escalona es Doctor en Historia Contemporánea por la Universidad de Barcelona.
