Coffee Connections

Coffee Connections

Fri, May 8, 9:00 AM
From Backstory English Bookshop - Events
4.7

A casual (but coordinated) coffee break to meet new friends, take a Zoom break, and get your AM caffeine fix. Stop by for a few minutes or stay the whole time. Bring a friend or wander in solo. Come for the coffee and company, or just bring a book to read while surrounded by other in-real-life, community-seeking humans. Come by every Friday, or just when you happen to be in town. Make it whatever you need it to be that week. It's not an \*event\* per se, but we hope these Friday meet-ups can become a fixture of the bookshop! Gathering spot will be in the downstairs area of the bookshop (near the Community Library). Coffee and tea are 1.50€ and can be purchased at the cash register upstairs. Find more info on our Instagram (@backstorybookshop) or website (www.backstorybookshop.com).

Mercè Rodoreda Book Club Series: Session 5 — With Nicholas Caistor

Mercè Rodoreda Book Club Series: Session 5 — With Nicholas Caistor

Wed, May 13, 4:00 PM
From Backstory English Bookshop - Events
4.7

This year, Backstory is launching a **five-month Book Club series dedicated to Mercè Rodoreda**, one of the most renowned Catalan writers of the 20th century. The series runs from January to May, in parallel with the CCCB exhibition *Rodoreda, a forest*, and is designed to introduce English-speaking readers to Rodoreda’s work through its translations. Across five monthly sessions, we will read five key works by Rodoreda, guided by **translators and scholars who have played a central role in bringing her writing into English**. Each session combines close reading, contextual discussion, and open conversation, always in an accessible, non-academic format. The series will conclude with a **guided group visit to the CCCB exhibition**, thanks to their support. ### 📅 Session 5 — May ### [📖 Journeys and Flowers](https://backstorybookshop.shop/product/journeys-and-flowers/) **Original title:** *Viatges i flors* **Translator:** Gala Sicart & Nicholas Caistor **Publisher:** Daunt Books Publishing **Original publication:** 1980 *Journeys and Flowers* is one of Mercè Rodoreda’s most imaginative and experimental works. Composed of short, dreamlike prose pieces, the book moves between travel writing and surreal fable, exploring themes of displacement, power, violence, and the absurdity of social structures. Through sharp irony and poetic language, Rodoreda creates a world that is both unsettling and darkly humorous. ### 👤 Guest: **Nicholas Caistor** Nicholas Caistor is a translator, journalist, and author of non-fiction. He has translated more than forty works of fiction from Spanish, Portuguese, and French, including books by Paulo Coelho, Eduardo Mendoza, Juan Marsé, and Dominique Sylvain. He has twice received the Valle-Inclán Prize for Translation from Spanish. He is the co-translator of Journeys and Flowers, and his work has played an important role in introducing Spanish and Catalan literature to English-language readers. Alongside his work as a translator, he has published biographies of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, and Octavio Paz, among others.

Cli-Fi Book Club: 'The Water Knife' by Paulo Bacigalupi

Cli-Fi Book Club: 'The Water Knife' by Paulo Bacigalupi

Wed, May 6, 4:30 PM
From Let's talk about climate change
4.8

The climate emergency requires more than facts alone. The transformation we need must be measured in greenhouse gas emissions averted and solar panels installed, but it is also an emotional transition, a shift in the narratives we tell, a reconnection with old wisdom and so much more. In short, it is perfectly suited for fiction. If you are seeking such guidance, and if you want to be part of a community, we would love to have you join the Cli-Fi Club this month. This month we are reading 'The Water Knife' by Paulo Bacigalupi, an American novelist who has won the Hugo and Nebula awards and was a finalist for the National Book Award. 'The Water Knife' is frequently included on lists of top cli-fi, but I have yet to read it. Excited to read and discuss with all of you. This event is free, but please get your copy from the wonderful English bookstore that hosts our book club meetings, Backstory. You can also [buy a copy of the book from them online](https://backstorybookshop.shop/product/the-water-knife/ ). To cover Meetup fees and other costs, we also encourage a €1 donation per attendee. **About the Cli-Fi Club** We read climate fiction — ie, cli-fi — of all types. Our focus is on works that grapple seriously and thoughtful with the emotions and meaning of this moment, what may lie ahead and what may already be lost. Our selections go well beyond the stereotypical conception of cli-fi — ie, science fiction and post-apocalyptic narratives — to include a range of works that engage creatively with humanity’s great challenge, and may even leave you inspired. **About this community** Are you new to the meetup group Let’s Talk About Climate Change or our WhatsApp group Mobilizing Hope? We work to bring together English-speaking people in Barcelona and beyond for climate education and action, and also community. We welcome speakers of Catalan, Castellano and other languages, but most of our events are in English because most of our organizers and attendees are more comfortable in English than other languages. We created this group because we could not find any community like it. We range from degrowthers to startup founders, from artists to data scientists. We may not agree on everything, but we all want to move in the same direction. If you do too, you’re welcome to make it your home.
