Lilyfield Rd and IW council

If you can, please **join us at the Council chambers** (Level 6, 260 Liverpool Rd, Ashfield) at 6:15pm on Tuesday 19 May, for a 6:30pm start. Alternatively meet at 5.45 pm at the fountain in Lackey Street Summer Hill for a short ride to Inner West Council (at Ashfield Town Hall) to attend the council meeting to help lock in delivery of the Lilyfield Road cycleway. Carry your helmets into the meeting so the councillors can see the bike users attending. FYI The proposed Lilyfield separated bike paths will extend from the new park to the Hawthorn canal. There is opposition brewing from locals mainly concerned about car parking. **On Tuesday 19th May, Council will vote on whether to allow the Lilyfield Road Cycleway to proceed to the detailed design phase of the project.** There are also motions relating to fixing the worst parts of the Carrington Road cycleway, and working with Bike Marrickville to offer valet bike parking at major events. FYI Opposition to the Lilyfield Rd cycleway is building. So, to ensure this connection from the Greenway to Rozelle parklands is built, **we need to show up in numbers to the meeting itself, and speak in favour.** This is especially important for Lilyfield Road, which we are confident 10 people will come and fight against. We need to outnumber them. The already bad Cost of Living crisis has recently got worst with the closing of the Straight of Hormuz and the oil crisis the world has been plunged into because of it. A11y Bytes Sydney

A11y Bytes is back for its fourteenth year, celebrating Global Accessibility Awareness Day. [Register for A11y Bytes Sydney 2026](https://events.humanitix.com/a11y-bytes-2026-sydney) The heart of digital accessibility and inclusion is not about guidelines, codes or regulations. It’s about people, and life, and how we live, how we access information, and how our lives are affected by the technologies of today. As many as 500 people have attended online Bytes events, as well as physical events in Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney attended an A11y Bytes event, making this the largest community run accessibility event in Australia. The event has since branched out into parts of New Zealand and it continues to grow. You don’t have to be an accessibility aficionado to attend. This event is about us all talking, thinking and learning about digital accessibility and inclusion together. What makes a nation? Bernhard Yack on Nationalism

What makes up a nation? This is the hottest topic in the West right now and will be for the forseeable future. Is it just a set of shared institutions governing a territory or an economic zone that we rationally choose to be a part of? Or even a set of otherwise random people with shared values? Philosopher Bernhard Yack argues in *Nationalism and the Moral Psychology of Community* that these ideas of the civic nation are a myth because they deny the very premise on which the nation and national feeling rests: there must be something that is inherited. He writes: "in order to characterize national belonging as a form of rational attachment, one must ignore the contingent inheritance of distinctive experiences and cultural memories that is an inseparable part of every national political identity. And one must pretend that it makes sense to characterize nations such as France, Canada, and the United States as voluntary associations for the expression of shared political principles. Such is the myth of the civic nation." Yack says that the power of national feeling in an age of individualism and popular sovereignty seems surprising but shouldn't be. It is one of the most powerful forms of enduring community even, or especially, between equals with a democratic voice. I will explore and critique Yack's arguments and invite discussion. Explore Proposed New Southwest Metro Path

Seizing on the success of the Greenway, the NSW Government has announced a new 'Active Transport Corridor' along the soon to opened Metro between Sydenham and Bankstown. Much of this corridor already exists, either as paths, footpaths or quiet streets. It remains to be seen what the design is, and what happens at the major road crossings. Announcements are cheap. Come with me as we explore where this corridor will go, what some of the alternatives are. We can view much of the progress of the Metro (the Bankstown Plaza, the stations) and we may get some glimpses of metro train sets being tested. Part of the corridor is also a major freight corridor. Unlike the Greenway, this corridor will link major centres, community facilities and metro stations. We meet at the 'Yarn Circle', the point at Tennent Parade, Hurlstone Park, where the Greenway meets the Cooks River Path. This is just a short ride down from the Dulwich Hill L1 Light Rail terminus (Jack Shanahan Park) and is next to Lang Rd bridge. Meet at 8:30 ready to ride, with a bike in good working order, spare tube, helmet, water and sunscreen. We will ride along the Cooks River Path to Carrington St, we won't actually go to Sydenham station (BTW the Metro is not running that weekend) pause, and then continue on back streets, paths etc, all the way to Bankstown. We do ride on a number of quiet streets, jump footpaths, so it is not a straightforward ride. At Bankstown (we may have coffee at Belmore or Bankstown - to be decided) you have the option of catching the train to Lidcombe, then another train back to the Inner West. I will ride on to pick up the M5 Linear park at Salt Pan Creek. This will take us back to Earlwood, a few hills, then back to our starting point. The full ride is 34 km. I would class it more intermediate rather than beginner.u

The GSBT Section 3 - Rooty Hill to Meadowbank

Take the train from Redfern platform4 at 7.13 AM to Rooty Hill, starting the ride from the Rooty Hill station at 8.30. There is quite a good cafe next to the station on the RSL side. This segment is complex with lots of turns at 35kms riding to Parramatta and along the Parramatta River to Meadow bank. Some urban traffic is expected closer to Parramatta the bulk of the riding will be on very good quality cycle paths. Lunch will be at Meadow Bank cafe. At the end of the ride take the ferry to the CBD or Train it. Coolish weather so bring layers and rain gear - and snacks as long sections between food opportunities.
