We learned that FPD has 2 athletic games scheduled for Tuesday and the parking lot where we meet is going to be full. Also they are using the trails for training now. Moving the location to Wesleyan - same time and day. Hope to see you all there.
Please bring hydration, bug spray, walking sticks if desired, etc. See you there!
Meet at the FDR Park Visitor Center parking lot off of Highway 190. Hike ~7 miles on the Longleaf Loop trail. maybe a 2.5 mph pace. Please be ready to roll at start time. Please use the app's map pin to take you to location if you've never been before. It works! Plan extra time if you have to buy a parking pass.
Bring sandwich, snacks, water, poles, (bug spray), sunscreen, hat, etc. Restrooms at the center; You need a state parking pass; (or $10 fee). Leashed dogs okay.
Take yourself off rsvp if you can't make it, but no need to message me about why. Remember to keep your hike leader in sight at all times.
Civilian Conservation Corps built the office Stone Building originally called the Roosevelt Inn in the mid 1930s. Inside behind the checkout desk is a picture on a wall of the inside of the building when it had a dining room on the main floor.
This hike is part of the Mammoth March Training Series. We will hike 16 miles at a brisk pace on the Pine Mountain East and Dowdell Knob Loop trails to build endurance for the upcoming Mammoth March event in October.
You should consider the miles and elevation of this hike before registering. AllTrails rates this trail as "hard." I recommend that you be an experienced hiker or have completed the 12-mile hike event (August 8th) at a good pace. If you're not able to keep up, you could be left behind. A link to the AllTrails description is in the comments.
Mandatory items to bring: Water and snacks sufficient for a 16-mile hike. Also, there are no restrooms at the trailhead or on the trail, so come prepared. Remember to bring your state park pass. Recommended items to bring: Insect repellent and hiking sticks.
After the hike, we plan on eating at Callaway Gardens Country Kitchen Restaurant before heading home.
If you are interested in carpooling, please let me know in the comments section.
