Was the Universe Designed for Human Beings?
Details
Many religionists, observing that the fundamental constants of the Universe appear to be "fine tuned" to promote the development of life in general, and intelligent (read: human) life in particular, claim that this is evidence for the existence of a thotful, careful creator deity. This is called the Anthropic Principle, from the Greek word anthropos (man). BUT ... there's more than one flavor of the AP!
The Atheist Lounge will tackle this subject on, as usual, the last Thursday of the month. Order food and drink at 7 PM, with short presentation starting about 30-45 minutes thereafter, and plenty of open discussion after that.
If you're feeling ambitious, you can prep for it by reading physicist Victor J. Stenger's book The Fallacy of Fine-Tuning: Why the Universe Is Not Designed for Us.
Also, if you wish, bring a skeptic-appropriate book for the book exchange.
