Happy 2019! It's been a few months since we've had a meetup, but we are back, hosted by the Port Workspace Makerspace in Oakland.

This month, we're learning about how hard drives work by taking them apart. We'll undo some enterprise-grade hard drives from Toshiba, Hitachi, Western Digital and Seagate, and explore how each works.

Gold plated drive heads traveling nanometers above a disk traveling at 100+mph? Super strong Neodymium rare earth magnets? Precision machining at the micron level? It's all part of the hard drive you use every day. David Ordal, CEO of ExaVault, a large scale data storage company, will lead the exploration as we dissemble hard drives and understand how they're used in both personal computers and large scale storage arrays.

Enterprise hard drives and tools will be provided, and you'll be able to take home the components of the hard drive(s) you take apart.

Thanks to ExaVault and the Port Workspace, this meetup is free.
