What we’re about
Tokyo Meditation Meetup!
Welcome fellow meditators! Join the Tokyo Mindfulness Substack community here to stay updated with events, retreats and guided meditations.
We hold weekly meditation sessions, usually on Tuesday and Thursday nights for one hour. We have regular group meditation sessions focused on meditation in “the buddhist tradition,” without the traditional bowing to statues or chanting. Just sitting and focusing on the breath, body, and mind, for the most part. We also have retreats of varying lengths for those who want to go deeper.
The meditation sessions are suitable for both beginners and more advanced meditators -- I will also indicate which day is reserved for advanced/beginner. Emphasis will be on the development of mindfulness and wisdom, as well as lovingkindness. Chairs and meditation cushions are available. Guidance in these methods is provided in English.
There's also a chance to exchange views and experiences. The point is to have a non-judgmental safe-space to share your experience. If you want to remain silent, that's fine, too.
This group can be a starting point for practicing, discussing or experiencing the dhamma/dharma together and may serve to support your personal practice. :)
Come join us!

Membership: Our regular sessions are typically 1,000 yen. If you become a paid member of Tokyo Mindfulness for 3,000 yen/month, you get access to ALL of our regular events, as well as discounted and priority access to retreats and special events. Get a membership here.

What is TRE?
TRE® (Trauma and Tension Releasing Exercise) is the body-based method which can release your tension and stress by creating safe natural tremoring induced by a set of simple exercise in your body. It can be practiced at home on your own after a few practice sessions.
Humans have a built-in biological mechanism to release stress through shaking. This is called neurogenic tremoring, and is the basis behind TRE. You might have seen animals in the wild shake of stress - humans do the same thing! Here is a great blog post about TRE and how it works.
From “Quakers & Shakers,” the Sufi Whirling Dervishes, to Native American Shamans practicing ecstatic movement, historically this shaking medicine has appeared in different forms across the world. For this event, we’re using it in a secular context - to let go of stress.
In this workshop led by a certified TRE provider Akiko Matsuda, you will learn how to literally “shake it off.” We start with an explanation of how it works, a few basic warm-up movements, and then the tremors will happen naturally and involuntarily.
You will be in a comfortable lying-down position on the ground for most of the time. (There is no dancing involved, just lying on the floor and doing these sequence of exercises)
Experiences vary, and many people report feeling relaxed, calm, and peaceful afterwards — like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders.
Recommended for those who:
- cannot sleep well
- have chronic pain such as stiff shoulders, back pain, migraine headaches, etc.
- just want to relax
- want to stabilize their mental ups and downs.
- want to relieve weight gain and swelling caused by stress.
- want to experience the body's ability to shake.
What to expect:
- Explanation about TRE in Japanese and English
- A safe, controlled environment with expert guidance
- Small group, maximum 8 people
- Yoga mats provided
What to bring:
- Comfortable clothes (sweat pants)
- Water bottle
Price: 5,000 yen. Please bring cash on the day of or PayPay.
Location: Meguro City Community Center, a 10 minute walk from Meguro station. Room 4 on the 8th floor. Google maps link here.
Doors open at 945am and we start at 10 am sharp. Please be on time! Please message Akiko directly on meetup if you have any questions.
