Hey everyone!! It's been awhile since we've done a Boombox and Freeplay night, so let's check it out this Saturday!
If you've never been to Boombox, you're in for a treat. It's the only dedicated karaoke bar in the city (and likely the state tbh). Boombox is tiny bar compared to most that we frequent, but that only makes it an even better spot to belt some of your favorite ballads. The bar attracts nothing but friendly patrons, so you don't have to worry about anyone judging your singing. Plus, since Boombox doesn't make you stand on a stage of any kind you're singing amongst the crowd. It's a far less intimidating karaoke experience. Don't be surprised if the whole bar joins you if you pick a popular enough tune. If you're not one to sing don't worry, no one will pressure you to take the mic, just simply hang out and enjoy the vibe. :) We'll get there for 7:30 to beat the crowds, and get some songs in since the place is usually mobbed later in the night.
Boombox has really stepped up their drink game in recent years. They have some fantastic specialty cocktails, we're especially partial to The Love Cat which comes in an adorable lucky cat mug. If you order off menu, their spirit selection is somewhat limited, but there's a lot they can make. They're a Japanese inspired/themed bar, so their cocktails reflect that. They also have a selection of Japanese beers and of course sake if you're a fan of rice wine. There's also cider options and wine. Should have something for everyone.
Once we've had our full of singing, we'll head on over to Freeplay which is a few blocks away. If you need to come late, we'll update our location in the comments. Easily one of the best bars in the city, Freeplay is an arcade bar that sports arguably the best dance floor in the city. They have a wide selection of arcade games, with retro being their primary focus, and with just a $12 cover at the door all the games are free to play all night. There's also air hockey which is a popular hangout spot for our group. Freeplay's upstairs dance floor is a blast. Far from the stuffy club atmosphere you may picture when you think of a large dance spot. They play top hits of various decades, and the vibe is not serious in the slightest. Don't be surprised to see people dancing like a goofball on purpose, and we've seen the rare conga line break out.
Freeplay offers two bars, one in the downstairs arcade and one just above the dance floor, so getting a drink is never too much of a hassle. They have a full bar so all your staple cocktails are likely possible. Their video game inspired cocktails are good, but don't expect anything too mind blowing. You'll also likely have one hell of a headache from all the sugar the next morning haha. There's also plenty of canned options including seltzers. They also have beer and cider on draft.
It should be a fun night! Please reach out to the hosts with any questions.
