Gas utilities often push to blend renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen into their existing pipeline systems as a foundation for their decarbonization strategies. However, supply constraints, high costs, and emissions risks prevent RNG and hydrogen from meaningfully contributing to a reduction in gas utilities’ climate pollution.

This presentation will provide important context on the state of RNG and hydrogen technology and policy, walk through the risks associated with trying to use them to decarbonize gas utilities, and share real-world examples of how utilities are discounting or covering up these risks. It will explain why utilities pursue these ‘clean fuels’ strategies despite the evidence against them, why these fuels bring higher cost, health, and safety risks to customers, and why such strategies are destined to merely delay real, lower-cost solutions like clean electrification.
