🪖 AN ANTI-WAR ALLEGORY SET IN AN UNNAMED COUNTRY
An old schoolfriend (future Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Howard Sackler) wrote the somewhat poetic script for the first film the 24 year old Kubrick directed, edited and photographed using a silent camera in a forest outside Los Angeles.

It is where a young lieutenant, a battle-hardened sergeant, a tough GI and a nervous young recruit find themselves stranded in enemy territory after a plane crash and must confront their own fears and desires. The acting may be uneven but the photography is impressive, the soundtrack and editing inventive, and the picture throws a fascinating light on both America's emerging independent cinema and on Kubrick's future work, the key themes of which (eg the recurrence of doubles, the central idea of plans going tragically wrong through madness and human error) are to be found here. For decades, the 62 minute version was all that existed of Fear and Desire, which a still dissatisfied Kubrick withheld from release throughout his lifetime. (...)
