September Classics: The Guns of Navarone (1961)

Details

"The Guns of Navarone" was a 1961 movie based on the second novel of "Master Storyteller" Alistair MacLean.
MacLean wrote many thrillers and adventure novels in much a similar genre to Ian Fleming but, having read both, was a better writer than Fleming IMHO.
Many of his novels were made into films but he found most of the adaptations to be lacking.
"Navarone" and "Where Eagles Dare(1968)" were the exceptions. "Navarone" sported a superb cast, great script, was well directed, and won the Golden Globe best picture as well as several others wins and nominations including Academy Awards.
The cast is amazing:
Gregory Peck
David Niven
Anthony Quinn
Stanley Baker
Anthony Quayle
Irene Papas
Gia Scala
James Darren (who even does a bit of singing)
By 1967 a frustrated MacLean decided to write both the screenplay and novel at the same time for "Where Eagles Dare" which I may choose for another watch party some time. Comparing "Where Eagles Dare" to the disappointing big budget 70mm "Ice Station Zebra" (same year) is a case in point.
MacLean's favorite settings were WWII and Sea adventures. "Navarone" is a wartime film made during a flurry of wartime films like "Bridge on the River Kwai", "The Great Escape", "the Longest Day", and it is one of the best.
Its fun, over-the-top, and a thrilling ride. Enjoy!
Watch party details to follow. Starts early because of the 157 min length.
