What we’re about
Welcome to the New York Backpackers!
We're a club of outdoor enthusiasts who come together for day hikes, weekend backpacking trips, and longer excursions. We love all outdoor sports such as rock climbing, ice climbing, kayaking, alpine, nordic, or telemark skiing, snowboarding and biking.
Our Club provides all kinds of adventures year round. Please check out our past events and sign up future events.
We have a community set up on WhatApp for anyone who wants to chat about the different outdoorsy subjects here: https://chat.whatsapp.com/GSvnMUGBUQp18dJND42Dd6

See all- Post Memorial Harriman CampingBig Hill Shelter, Stony Point, NY
Let's go camping in Harriman park. Camping shelters are available on a first come first serve basis, if a shelter is occupied, camping is allowed 300 feet from the shelter. If we're lucky and we get early on Friday, we might get the shelter, if not then we camp in the shelter's surroundings.
There are 9 shelters that are far from each other. I decided to go with Big Hill Shelter , as the reviews are good, views should be nice (NYC), and this shelter might be less crowded than West Mountain Shelter.
If getting closer to date we are a medium group then we can change to West Mt. In general I'm open to suggestions or if anyone wants to co host.
- Bathrooms - There are some bathrooms in the park, but consider bringing your own TP and means to dispose your waste.
- Water - you drink from ponds and lakes. Big Hill is close to The Three Reservoirs, particularly Third Reservoir, that are excellent water sources, but filtration is recommended. Also bring you own water.
- Activities - we can decide later, I'll open a whatsapp group.
Please feel free to add any suggestion.
