A unique opportunity of a walk in the beautiful Peak District, plus a guided surface tour of the magnificent MAGPIE MINE!

Walk overview: A generally easy walk, with field paths, footpaths, short road sections, pavements, short grassy descent, short woodland sections, including (optional) stepped descent.
A full guided surface tour of Magpie Mine is planned, duration 1hr (approx). If poor weather (wet) a shortened version. Both comprising; history of the mine, including rich ore finds & huge losses, technological innovations and the alleged murders of three miners! Also included, illumination of a number of very deep mine shafts. Finally, a few mining related surprises enroute back to Bakewell.

Walk route: Bakewell - Intake Lane - Over Haddon - MAGPIE MINE - Sheldon - Great Shacklow Wood - Ashford - Endcliff Wood - Bakewell. Distance: 9.31 miles. Leisurely pace.

Walk information: Bring usual walking equipment. Packed lunch/drink. Quiet dogs on leads welcome. Please take lots of photos for our website.
Toilets in Bakewell, enroute in Over Haddon and Ashford (off route).
Parking: Various car parks close to town centre.
Bus: If travelling from Sheffield/Chesterfield why not use the bus and leave your car at home.
Meet 10.00 for 10.15am Bakewell Visitor Centre, Bridge Street (see location map).

  2. For those members unable to attend this walk, walk will be repeated this year, all being well.
  3. In addition, if you are just interested in a guided surface tour of Magpie Mine, Peak District Mines Historical Society (PDMHS) will be providing 'Free' surface tours on Sunday 8th September 2024, as part of the "Heritage Open Days" national event. No need to book. Light refreshments available. Note: You may be lucky or unlucky, as I will be one of the Society guides!
  4. UNDERGROUND VISIT - INTERESTED?
    DEEP ECTON MINE - Sunday 15th September 2024.
    PDMHS will also be opening Deep Ecton Mine, Staffordshire to the general public. There will be tours at 40 minute intervals from 10.00 until 16.00. Booking is required. Helmets/lamps are provided, unless you've got your own. Very popular, don't delay, book ASAP or you may be disappointed! Again, this is part of the "Heritage Open Days" event.
