About us

The purpose of these Lighting Workshops is to provide hands on instruction in Fashion and Classical Portrait Lighting, as applies to photographers and painters desiring to learn sound principles and techniques of photographic lighting.

In these workshops you will learn classical and fashion portrait lighting styles and how to create them with natural available light, small shoe mount strobe units and studio lighting gear.

In our eleventh year with Meetup, more that 700 students of lighting have joined our workshop events. Not limited to digital, we also specialize in film based photographic lighting techniques. While they are very similar, certain film cameras have higher flash sync speeds than digital. We also provide in-depth information on outdoor and in studio flash settings and provide talented fashion and portrait models to work with.

"Creative OCF Lighting Techniques for Photographers", 164 page full color lighting manual:
In my 45 plus years of teaching photographic lighting, I discovered through the multitude of workshops I both attended and taught, that the retention rate from workshops was about 10%. For this reason, I decided to write and publish a book on photographic lighting. Thus allowing my students to have a companion lighting guide for reference, study and exploration.
I look forward to seeing you at my next lighting workshop! David Lloyd, CPP

Step into a world where light no longer merely illuminates… it directs emotion, shapes character, and whispers story into every frame.
The Director’s Chair Lighting Workshop is an immersive creative experience designed for photographers, visual storytellers, portrait artists, and dreamers who want to master the cinematic beauty of continuous light. Promo Video: https://vimeo.com/1192093030?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci
This is not simply a technical workshop about exposure ratios and modifiers — it is a journey into atmosphere, mood, gesture, and visual poetry.
Under the guidance of master photographer and lighting designer David Lloyd, participants will explore how continuous lighting transforms the photographic process into something deeply intuitive and almost theatrical. Unlike flash, continuous light allows you to see the emotion as it unfolds — sculpting faces, revealing texture, shaping movement, and building cinematic depth in real time.
Inspired by the elegance of classic Hollywood portraiture, couture fashion editorials, European cinema, and the quiet drama of the director’s set, this workshop reveals how to create images that feel timeless, painterly, and emotionally alive.
Throughout the session you will discover:
• How to sculpt the human face with soft cinematic illumination
• Creating mood and atmosphere using continuous light sources
• The artistry of shadow, falloff, and dimensional depth
• Building visual narrative through pose, wardrobe, texture, and light
• Working with modern mirrorless cameras for cinematic portraiture
• Techniques for achieving luminous skin tones and natural catchlights
• Directing expression and emotional presence in front of the camera
• Crafting images that feel like still frames from an unseen film
You will photograph a beautifully styled model in an intimate creative environment designed to encourage experimentation, inspiration, and artistic growth. Every lighting setup will be demonstrated live, allowing participants to witness subtle changes in real time — a powerful advantage unique to continuous lighting.
Whether your passion is fashion, portraiture, fine art, branding, or cinematic storytelling, The Director’s Chair Lighting Workshop will expand the way you see light itself.
This is a workshop about slowing down… observing… shaping emotion with intention… and learning to create photographs that feel less like snapshots and more like remembered scenes from a Hollywood Movie Set.
