Tortuga Food and Dive - Copenhagen Edition

Tortuga Festival Special.

Leaving at 2:00pm, we will enjoy two dives on the Fort Lauderdale Mooring Balls and get extended Surface Intervals to hear the Music of the Tortuga Festival.

We will also be serving food hot and cold food on board, included in the excursion price!

After the second dive we will stick around for another hour or so to take in the tunes... This trip will fill fast ! Expect to return around 8:00pm

This special dive trip will be $75 plus rentals.

History: The SS Copenhagen was a 325 ft. coal freighter that ran aground off the shores of Pompano Beach on May 26, 1900. She was carrying 4,940 tons of coal on voyage from Philadelphia to Havana.

The Copenhagen was built in 1898 and was 325 feet long with a 47 foot beam. She was rigged as a schooner as in the early day of steam power it was usual to have the ship rigged in case of engine failure.

The ship hadn't seen much service for its owners the Glasgow Ship Owners Company before sinking in May 1900 whilst transporting a cargo of coal from Philadelphia to Havana. She had been unfortunate and hit a rock ledge off Pompano.

The scattered remains of this wreck is located in an area known as Pompano Ledge approximately 1/2 mile due east of the large blue tower on Pompano Beach. The waters at this rock ledge were relatively shallow and she sunk at a depth of 36 foot.

In the early years this site was used for target practice by the navy before being declared a site of historical importance and named as Florida's fifth underwater preserve in 1994. As you will see in the video below the site is now protected and has a plaque commemorating the site which has been placed just south of the wreck.

This wreck site can be dived by novice divers and experienced divers and visibility is usually excellent if you dive with an incoming tide.

Expect to see lots of fish, sea turtles and lobster although the wreck itself is now mostly overgrown by a well established reef.
