Hello!
Finding space to free our attention from the demands of technology and society, and to give our attention to an object of choice (a book!), has become increasingly challenging. One of the best remedies that I have found to help nurture my own attention and resist the fracturing of it has been reading the long, sinuous sentences of the French writer Marcel Proust.
This summer I began a ritual of reading Proust on Thursday evenings in the Morcom Rose Garden, leaving my phone at home, completely unplugging in the sanctuary of roses as an act of spiritual and aesthetic development, as well as political resistance to the technological demands on our attention–and I would love to make it a communal practice.
If you would like to join, and practice regaining “lost time” as well as your attention, or simply wish to read a great novel, or to “do nothing” in a rose garden, please join me! Just bring yourself, a copy of ISOLT–and maybe a bubbly water. :)
This Meetup is one of many attentional “sanctuary spaces” of the Strother School of Radical Attention (SORA)–spaces of attention activism that provide shelter and nourishment for attentional capacities.
Where: Morcom Rose Garden, Oakland, near the reflection pond
When: Thursdays from 5:30-6:45 PM
What to bring/expect: An hour of quiet reading (bring any volume of In Search of Lost Time), followed by a short chat.
Who’s welcome: If you are a lifelong reader of ISOLT, a literary scholar, a complete beginner, or someone who has never heard the name Marcel Proust, you are welcome!
Weather: If it rains, it will be canceled.
