  • Jan 12, 2013 · 8:00 AM

If you or someone you know wants to learn to snow shoe or cross country ski this is the perfect event to get out there and give it a try. Both rentals and lessons will be offered for free at many of the host sites - be sure to register with them to ensure you get in.

While there will be no official Random Hikers event scheduled to take advantage of these great deal, I am listing it here on the site so that our members can use the RSVP and comment section of this event to communicate with other randomites.

You are responsible for making your own reservations with the participating organizations. Since this is not an official Random Hiker events they will be organized and run by other members just like you - be safe and enjoy the day.

What is Winter Trails Day?

Winter Trails Day offers children and adults new to snow sports the chance to try snowshoeing and cross country skiing for free, and to discover the great fitness and social benefits with these easy-to-learn winter sports.

The 18th annual Winter Trails Day is on January 12, 2013 and involves almost 100 resorts and Nordic Centers nationwide, and gets 11,000 kids and adults on the snow each year.

Winter Trails programs and activities vary in size and scope, as each venue chooses a program that will introduce these sports to their communities. Select the state or area to see the locations that are participating. Each Winter Trails event is run by a local organization or business. If you have questions about the location nearest you or if you have a group you wish to bring, please contact the venue directly for details.

The sport offering at each location varies, so please check the specific venue listing for details. Most Winter Trails events are located at Nordic centers or on public lands operated by the U.S. Forest Service or the National Parks Service. Many locations offer education programs and trail tours. Equipment and trail fees are free.

With tomorrow's weather forecast - nice in some areas, not so nice in others - you may want to contact the people running the event to make sure it is still being held before venturing out. If you do get to participate I hope you have a good time and look to see you on the trails win the group sometime soon.

I have updated the links a couple of times and can't figure out why they keep "failing". I have updated them again but you can use the one John posted too.

As John mentions, there is no formal event being run by us, instead you can use the RSVP and comment sections on the event page to coordinate with others from the group.
