See all- Street: People, Places, and Things - Jamel ShabazzDowntown Rowlett Station, Rowlett, TX
This month we are reviewing and practicing the techniques of US Army veteran and master photographer Jamel Shabazz.
We will be focusing on candid and street portraiture around the dart train in tribute to his early project Going Underground (New York Subway)

If you would like a shot list, here is one for on the train:
I'll create a shot list inspired by the distinctive style of Jamel Shabazz, whose street photography brilliantly captured New York City culture, particularly in the subway system and urban environments during the late 1970s and 1980s. His work is known for authentic portraiture, cultural documentation, and a unique ability to connect with his subjects. We are not looking to capture "retro" to previous generations he covered but rather portraiture, culture, connections from 2025.
# Jamel Shabazz-Inspired Street Photography Shot List
## On the Train:
- A candid portrait of two friends sitting side by side, showcasing their unique style and clothing details - focus on their genuine connection and posture
- A carefully composed shot of a person reading, framed between train poles or handles, with dramatic subway lighting creating interesting shadows across their face
- A dignified portrait of an elder commuter dressed in their finest attire - capture their wisdom and presence with respectful framing
- A wide shot down the train car capturing multiple passengers and the linear perspective of the train interior - look for patterns in the seating and standing arrangements
- A close-up of hands - perhaps holding a book, phone, or just resting - that tells a story about the person
- A portrait of a stylish commuter showcasing distinctive fashion elements - hat, jewelry, footwear - that express their personal identity
- A moment of human connection between strangers - perhaps a shared smile, conversation, or small act of kindness
- A silhouette against train windows, capturing the figure's distinctive outline against passing light or station illumination
- A commuter lost in thought - focus on their contemplative expression as they gaze out the window or into the middle distance
- A dynamic shot of performers or musicians on the train, capturing both their energy and the reactions of the audience around them
## Around the Train (Platforms/Stations/Surroundings):
- A portrait of train workers in their element - conductors, maintenance staff, or cleaners - dignified and proud in their work environment
- A wide shot of the platform showing the architectural elements of the station alongside waiting passengers - look for interesting compositions with pillars, signs, and benches
- A moment captured at the turnstiles - people entering or exiting, showing the flow and energy of the transit system
- A portrait of street vendors or performers outside the station entrance - capture their charisma and entrepreneurial spirit
- People ascending or descending stairs in interesting light - look for dramatic shadows, silhouettes, or light beams through station architecture
- A carefully composed shot of someone waiting - capture their posture, expression, and environment to tell their story
- A group portrait of friends or family gathered near the station, positioned with intention and awareness of your camera
- The moment of transition as people exit the train onto the platform - capture the movement and dynamic energy
- A detail shot of urban elements near the station - graffiti, signage, advertisements - that captures the character of the neighborhood
- A portrait that captures the relationship between the train system and the surrounding neighborhood - perhaps showing the station entrance integrated into street life
## Photography Approach Tips (In Shabazz's Spirit):
- Connect with your subjects. Shabazz often introduced himself and asked permission, creating a collaborative portrait rather than stealing shots.
- Look for authentic style and cultural expression. Shabazz documented the unique fashion and self-presentation of his subjects with respect and appreciation.
- Celebrate community. Find moments that show connection, friendship, and community bonds.
- Seek dignity in your portraiture. Shabazz's work elevates and honors his subjects rather than exploiting them.
- Pay attention to composition while working quickly in the dynamic transit environment.
Good luck with your photography walk! Shabazz's approach combines technical skill with genuine human connection and cultural respect.
Agenda: We will be shooting on the train and at stations. We will drive through to West End, shoot there, then return to the station and head back towards Rowlett, jummping off at all the stations downtown. As we get closer to the sub bards we will determine how much activity is around at a particular stop.
This walk will be pretty weather proof with very little direct exposure to precipitations.
