In the now viral essay, Robert Mariani coins a term to describe an emerging phenomenon in American culture, the “dinergoth”. The dinergoth describes a certain aesthetic that is common among the downwardly mobile in Generation Z. To quote, “Dinergothdom exists as both a concentrated archetype and a mass-cultural wave. The dinergoth core is the pierced-up, gender-fluid Amazon warehouse worker who streams on Twitch, writes fanfiction, wears a furry tail to raves, runs an OnlyFans, and dreams of voice acting while working nights at the fulfillment center.”
This discussion will cover this essay, so please read it before attending. I will present a short 2 minute summary at the start of the discussion covering the highlights, but please read it in its entirety.
The focus of this discussion will be on these questions:
Do you agree with the reasons presented in this essay or do you attribute this “queering” of rural America to some other phenomenon?
Do you think this is a temporary phenomenon or will this shape American culture for years to come?
The essay implies dinergoth culture to be indicative of a delayed adolescence and inability to progress into adulthood and form a family/career. How do you think this will impact American culture in the near future?
