Demonstration & Outreach to End Horse-Drawn Carriages in Old Sacramento

Please join Working Animal Advocates on Sunday, September 7th as we peacefully demonstrate and educate the public about the inhumane, exploitative and unsafe horse-drawn carriage trade in Old Sacramento.

Help us educate the public about the plight of these horses who endure:

• Air pollution from car and truck exhausts
• Stress from city noise including
  honking horns, roaring motorcycles,
  car alarms, loud music, and freeway noise
• Risk of collision with vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians
• Threats of heat stroke and colic as a result of working in very high temperatures in the summer without necessary shade, rest, or water
• Risk of painful injury to their legs and hooves from standing and walking for long hours on pavement and cobblestones The presence of horse-drawn carriages in urban settings like Old Sacramento puts the safety of the horses and public at serious risk, as the horses must navigate through traffic and contend with cars, buses, motorcycles, bicyclists, pedestrians and companion animals that cross their paths and share limited space on the streets.

In recent years, there have been multiple incidents in Old Sacramento in which horses and passengers were injured, including three occasions in which horses were attacked and injured by dogs, one of which resulted in the dog being shot and killed, and two incidents in which carriages were struck by cars in hit-and-run accidents. Dozens of people and horses are injured or killed every year in carriage accidents in the U.S., and it is only a matter of time before another dangerous incident occurs in Sacramento.
