What we’re about
Cultivate a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us through somatic awareness and movement exploration
Most movement modalities focus on the “hardware” of the body - strengthening muscles and increasing flexibility through stretching. The Feldenkrais Method on the other hand works with the “software” of the body, namely the brain, the central nervous system, and how they coordinate each movement.
In an Awareness Through Movement lesson, we explore the mind-body connection and improve our coordination, movement patterns, posture, balance and breathing by learning to sense what is easy for our body to do instead of forcing it into submission. We believe in learning in comfort and continuous improvement. The subtlest sensations discovered in a lesson can evolve into powerful changes in your life!
A typical lesson consists of frequent body scans and structured mindful movement explorations. There are literally hundreds of lessons: some lessons resemble a blend of meditation and gentle yoga; some lessons are like neurological puzzles for the brain; and some lessons focus on developmental movements and how to acquire specific advanced skills.
These lessons were developed by Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais, an lsraeli scientist and one of the first Judo black belts in Europe. In accordance with the latest scientific research on brain neuroplasticity, the Feldenkrais Method uses our proprioception, sensory feedback and movements to change our neurological patterns. The practice can help to bring about a general sense of well-being, freedom and ease, manage chronic pain and improve function in a variety of activities from playing music to athletic endeavors.
