About us

Howdy everyone and thank you for your interest in THE OVER THE HILL CAMPING GANG.

First thing, OVER THE HILL doesn't mean an age group, it's just a name of an ol comic western series!

I was born and raised in Colorado, attended and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Denver. I taught fourth grade Colorado History, then junior/middle school Colorado History then onto high school and a brief time as a college instructor. I have written a couple books about Colorado History which I haven’t even thought about publishing but been told by several people that I should though I'd like our camping group to be more like one of the titles of one of the books. I DON'T KNOW WHERE I'M GOING UNTIL I GET THERE!

Camping and Getaways will mostly be dispersed camping. Although those who intend to utilize their RVs, I only look for camping areas which are primarily tents, small/popup trailers, vehicles which are like PRIME/AMAZON trucks or a camper shell attached to a truck, meaning I’m not much into GLAMPIN’ CAMPIN’. Wherever we’re camping, I’ll be planning a Getaway into areas of historical value/meaning. If I plan a camping trip I won’t be planning a hike. It’s all about other places to see than hiking a dirt trail.

Get Togethers, Happy Hours, Brunches or other types of dining/drinking and just sit around and talk about most anything but POLITICS. I plan/organize these events to get away from it. Why discuss it while others are trying to have a good time?

Colorado is the eighth largest state with a lot to see. I taught it all and now I want to see what is left. It's all out there, along the highway shoulders. We’ll follow the roads and drive without a destination until we get there. STOP, LOOK AND LINGER. Every highway bend, every scenic overlook, every canyon crook, and every alpine pass yield a glimpse into the beauty, wonder and awe of Colorado's Natural Soul.

Your suggestions are always welcomed and pretty much placed into action.
I hope to see you around the campfires, along the trails, shopping in the historical towns and driving the scenic byways and mountain passes of Colorado!

Thanks again for joining THE OVER THE HILL CAMPING GANG. It’s best to top off your gas tank!!!

Always drive safe and always remember, "One person's sunset is another person's dawn."
I'll see you all soon.
Don

Niwot Bandstand Whistlestop Park, 1st and Murray, Niwot, CO, US

    # Rock & Rails - Niwot

Before the Covid hit Colorado, we used to go to Niwot practically every Thursday. Damn we missed the LONG RUN. We ought to look at the Rebecca Folsom concert. I have no idea how many times I’ve been to one of her concerts. The one at Carbondale Park was sensational!

August 20: Headlining Band: Steely Dead / Steely Dan + Grateful Dead / Opening Act: Foggy Mountain Spaceship. I’m sure everyone knows that Steely Dead are a cover band for Grateful Dead and Steely Dan.

I’m more interested in the FOGGY MOUNTAIN SPACESHIP! Foggy Mountain Spaceship features Chris Elliott on Banjo, Chris Sheldon on the Banjo Tron Acoustical 2000™, and Kyle Ussery on Bass. The band performs original compositions, unexpected covers, psychedelic instrumentals and more. Find us on social media and come catch a show!

Niwot’s FREE summer concert series runs every Thursday night, June through August, in Whistle Stop Park. Let’s meet at the THE OLD OAK at around 4:30 PM then proceed to the park.

    Schedule
5:00 – 6:00: Happy Hour in the park, with drink specials and Opening Music

Things to Know Before You Go:
They do have a strict alcohol policy

NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL IS ALLOWED IN THE PARK.
Personal bags and coolers are screened at the entrance gate. We will ask that you dispose of all outside alcohol or return it to your car before entering the park. You are allowed to bring a lunch or munchies into the park
No alcohol is allowed to leave the enclosed area of Whistle Stop Park. No alcohol is allowed to cross-over the road to the Children’s Park. All alcohol must be disposed of before leaving the enclosed area of Whistle Stop Park.

NO ANIMALS ALLOWED, with the exception of service dogs. Rock & Rails is loud and crowded and is not the best choice for pets.

A variety of food trucks and local beer vendors serve Rock & Rails patrons so bring cash for easy purchasing.
Portable chairs and blankets are allowed. Please be kind and respectful to your neighbors and to the park.

I’ll bring a Colorado State Flag so you can locate me in case you’re late!
